Charlie started painting his nails not long after he came out, it was some form of control over his identity, never any fancy designs just solid colours that chipped with his relentless skin picking. He often thinks back to when he started, how scared he was to have painted his nails with a glitter topcoat, seems a far cry from the rainbow nails he frequently has now. It's not Charlie this anecdote is about, it's Nick. Charlie noticed Nick admiring his nails a long time ago, with his bisexual crisis gender did remain consist but it doesn't mean some concepts didn't fascinate him.

They were reading on Charlie's bedroom floor, aka Nick was reading and Charlie was taking off his purple nail varnish with the acetone remover. "You going to put anymore on?" Nick asked a little distracted, "No not yet, not for a little while, why do you want yours done?" Charlie retorted more as a joke than anything else, "Will you please?" Nick shyly enquired completely avoiding eye contact. Charlie tapped the floor opposite him and Nick shimmed closer, "What colour do you want, I have the rainbow, black and white, glitter top coat and clear top coat," Nick stared at the colours in front of him, "The dark blue please," Charlie put the other bottles away then gently removed Nick's cuticles after begging him to stay still avoid chopping his fingers off.

Nick stared on intently as Charlie applied the first coat allowed it to dry then do a second, he was quiet still even when he put the clear coat on top. The colour was nice. That's all he could managed just staring at his hands, "If you don't like it we can take it off," he pulled his hands away, "No I do like it hands off, thank you," he kissed Charlie on his forehead before returning to admire his nails. When he got home he showed his mum, she was happy because he was happy. The biggest test will be sixth form.

"Oy Nick Charlie rubbing off on you then, you don't have to become a girl you know," Harry taunted, rolling his eyes Nick turned to face him, "Harry I wanted to paint my nails end of discussion do you want yours done? Oh wait you're just playing chicken," Charlie watched on from around the corner. He wasn't going to intervene Nick had it handled and besides someone needs to put Harry in his place.

Nick was owning it, he didn't care, painted nails was not a sign of weakness as much as the other rugby team was trying to point out. The sky was grey and clouded over, the ground was dry though which was good meant they weren't going to slide about; Nick's purple nails were a stark contrast to the weathered ball and the bright blues of the Truham uniform. He ignored the snickering of the boys on the other team and continued warming up, Nick was team captain so he went over to see who got first possession, "Are you team captain?" The PE teacher asked, "Yes sir, Nick," "Nice nails," he commented turning Nick's hand as he shook it, "Thank you, came to see who gets possession should we flip a coin?" He suggested, the teacher agreed as Nick pulled out a coin. Heads for Truham and tails for visiting St Edwards. Heads.

Despite the snickering Nick played well demolishing the other players in the full contact sport, Charlie got tackled and needed some help getting up, "You alright Char?" Nick asked offering a hand up, "Yeah thanks," he took Nick's hand and stood up, Nick wrapped his arms around Charlie's waist kissing his cheek knowing full well he was being watched by the St Edwards' team, "You're brave today, down boy let go," Charlie ordered to Nick's pout. Maybe he should continue painting his nails.
