Billie sat in the driver's seat, phone in hand, waiting for Kai to finish her training. The past few weeks had been a whirlwind, with the photo of her and Kai holding hands at dinner blowing up on social media. She hadn't even noticed anyone taking pictures that night, but now the moment was plastered everywhere.

Scrolling through her timeline, Billie's eyes kept landing on the same reposts. Every major fan account had shared the picture, and every caption was almost identical: "Billie Eilish holding hands with potential girlfriend."

Billie's thumb hovered over the comments section, dreading what she'd find. She braced herself and clicked, her eyes scanning through the reactions.

"So happy, Billie deserves this."

"They look so cute together!"

"Hope her fans don't ruin this."

Some of them made her smile, but then there were the ones that turned her stomach.

"She's trying to secure a bag with Billie."

"This isn't gonna last."

"Please say this is a joke or a set for a movie."

Billie sighed, feeling a mix of anger and frustration bubble up inside her. She and Kai weren't even officially dating yet, and the idea of having to hide it already felt suffocating. When the time came to make things official, she knew they'd have to keep it private, away from the eyes of the world. The thought of sneaking around, being cautious, it drained her.

She was pulled from her thoughts by a knock on the passenger window. Billie looked up, her mood lifting immediately at the sight of Kai standing there with a bright smile on her face. For a moment, everything else faded.

Billie quickly unlocked the door, leaning over the center console to pop it open. "Hey," she said, dragging the word out playfully.

Kai climbed in, practically glowing with excitement. "Hi! I have exciting news!" Without hesitating, she leaned in to kiss Billie's lips, her enthusiasm clear in the way she pressed forward.

But something in Billie hesitated. With the recent flood of paparazzi pictures and the comments buzzing in her mind, she instinctively pulled back. It wasn't much—just a subtle movement—but it was enough to leave Kai hanging, her lips barely brushing Billie's before the moment dissolved. Billie turned away quickly, starting the car without making eye contact.

Kai blinked, taken aback by the sudden shift. "What?" she asked, confused by Billie's reaction, her smile fading as she leaned back into her seat.

Billie shook her head, trying to play it off casually. "Nothing," she said, her voice flat as she focused on pulling out of the parking spot.

The air in the car felt heavier, the warmth and excitement Kai had brought in quickly fading as she strapped herself in, her expression now more reserved. Billie, feeling the weight of the shift, glanced over as she checked her mirrors. "What was the exciting news?" she asked, trying to recapture the earlier energy, her voice light but not quite reaching the right tone.

Kai shrugged, pulling out her phone as a distraction. "I got my CPR and firearm certification," she said flatly, scrolling mindlessly through her notifications as if it were just another piece of information, not the big achievement it had been moments ago.

Billie's eyes widened, her heart swelling with pride. "Holy shit, Kai, that's amazing! That's a big step, no?" She reached over, placing a hand on Kai's thigh, hoping to bring back some of the excitement Kai had walked in with.

But Kai tensed under her touch, her body language rigid, no longer open. "Yeah," she muttered, her voice detached.

Billie furrowed her brows, feeling the shift more deeply now. "What's wrong?" she asked, her eyes flicking between the road and Kai, genuinely confused.

"Nothing," Kai replied, but the sharpness in her tone made it clear there was something. She tucked her phone away, closing her eyes as if trying to shut out the moment.

Billie wasn't one to let things slide, especially when something felt off. She couldn't just leave it. "I mean, you were excited a second ago. Now, you're not."

Kai opened her eyes but didn't meet Billie's gaze. "I mean, you used to kiss me.. Now, you're not." Her voice was bitter, sarcastic even, but beneath it was a vulnerability she was trying to hide.

The words hit Billie hard. She hadn't realized how much her pulling away had affected Kai. "Kai," Billie said softly, her voice low as she tried to explain, "we were just in a really busy, public place... I didn't want to risk it. People are already starting to speculate."

Kai shook her head, pushing Billie's hand off her thigh as her jaw tightened. "What happened to not caring about what people think? Are you ashamed of me or something?"

Billie's heart sank. She turned her eyes from the road briefly, meeting Kai's gaze, seeing the hurt in her eyes. "Kai, of course not. I'm not ashamed of you, not even close," Billie said, her voice firm but filled with emotion. "I'm just trying to protect you. People can be brutal. I don't want you to get caught up in all that mess."

Kai sat quietly, processing Billie's words. She knew Billie was right, she wasn't used to this kind of life—the constant scrutiny, the lack of privacy. As much as she wanted to understand, it was hard not to feel hurt in moments like these.

Billie kept glancing at her, her expression softening as the silence stretched between them. "So... we're okay?" Kai finally asked, her voice quieter, seeking reassurance.

"We're perfect," Billie said, squeezing Kai's hand gently. She brought it up to her lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss on the back of it. "I'm sorry if I made you feel any other way."

Kai smiled faintly, leaning back in her seat. "Okay," she whispered, her tension easing slightly as she admired Billie's side profile.

They drove in silence for a few moments, the tension between them easing but still lingering like the remnants of a storm. Billie broke it with a glance over at Kai. "Do you want to come over? Or do you want me to take you home?" she asked, her tone softer, more careful now.

Kai shifted in her seat, turning toward Billie. "Can I spend the night with you?" she asked, her voice carrying a hint of playfulness as her hand slid back to Billie's inner thigh.

The sudden touch made Billie's breath hitch, her foot pressing a little too hard on the gas. She let out a nervous laugh, quickly grabbing Kai's hand, and holding it firmly in place, stopping her from moving any higher. "We're, like, fifteen minutes away," Billie said, trying to keep her focus on the road, though her pulse had quickened. "Please don't give me a boner yet."

Kai laughed, the tension between them dissolving further, and for the first time since she'd gotten in the car, she felt like things were okay again.

Billie, now more relaxed, glanced over at her with a mischievous grin. "Maybe when we get back, we can celebrate your certifications properly," she teased, her voice playful but with a definite edge of anticipation.

Kai raised an eyebrow, amused. "Oh? And how exactly do you plan to celebrate?" she asked, playing along, her hand still warm in Billie's grasp.

Billie pressed a little more firmly on the gas pedal, eager to get home. "Guess you'll have to wait and see," she replied with a smirk, eyes fixed on the road ahead but her mind already racing through the possibilities.

The car hummed softly as they sped through the familiar streets, the city lights blurring into streaks outside the windows. The air between them was thick with unspoken promises, both of them eager for the privacy of home, away from the world, where they could finally let the tension unwind.
