Billie sat alone at the small table in the back of a quiet restaurant, the soft hum of conversations and clinking cutlery filling the background. She had chosen this spot for a reason—it was tucked away, intimate, and far from prying eyes. This date was important to her, and she wanted everything to feel just right. Billie fidgeted with the cloth napkin on her lap, her leg bouncing under the table with nervous energy. Even though they had spent plenty of time together, mostly in the comfort of each other's homes, this felt different. More intentional. She wanted Kai to know she was serious about their relationship, that it wasn't just casual to her anymore.
The sound of the restaurant door opening caused her to instinctively glance up, her heart skipping slightly. It wasn't Kai yet. Billie exhaled softly, her fingers drumming on the table.
The soft clatter of cutlery and the low hum of conversations filled the space, but all she could focus on was the fact that Kai hadn't arrived yet. She caught herself smoothing down the napkin for the hundredth time, just as a waitress appeared at her table.
"Are we ready to order?" the waitress asked with a polite smile.
Billie shook her head quickly. "No, not yet. I'm waiting on someone," she replied, trying to keep the nerves out of her voice.
The waitress nodded, glancing at the empty seat across from Billie. "I'll check back in a bit," he said before walking off.
Billie exhaled and reached for her phone, hoping to distract herself, but just as her fingers brushed the screen, the bells on the door jingled. She looked up, heart skipping a beat, and sure enough, it was Kai.
Kai scanned the room, her eyes searching for Billie, and when they finally landed on her, a wide smile spread across her face. She was dressed in a casual, slightly baggy graphic tee and loose black jeans, the kind of effortless style that made her look both cool and approachable.
Billie stood up as Kai made her way over, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves she hadn't expected. They'd seen each other plenty of times, but tonight felt different.
"Hi," Billie said shyly, her voice playful but soft.
"Hi," Kai replied with a smile, pulling Billie into a quick hug before stepping back.
"Thanks for coming," Billie said as they both sat down. Her fingers fiddled with the edge of the tablecloth, though she wasn't sure why she felt so anxious. This was Kai.
Kai sat down, her expression a mix of ease and slight awkwardness. "Thanks for inviting me." She shifted in her seat, and for a moment, there was an awkward silence between them—unusual, given how comfortable they normally were with each other.
The tension finally broke when Kai burst out laughing, causing Billie to chuckle too, though she was confused. "What?" Billie asked, tilting her head with a smile.
"You seem nervous," Kai teased, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
"I'm not," Billie said defensively, though the smile on her face betrayed her words as she glanced away.
Before Billie could come up with a clever retort, she suddenly remembered something. "Oh my gosh, I haven't told you!" she blurted out, her voice rising in excitement. "That beat you helped Finneas with? He decided to keep it, and he wanted me to ask if you'd come over sometime. He thinks you have some extra creativity to add."
Kai raised her eyebrows, surprised, but before she could respond, the waiter returned. "Are we ready to order now?"
"Oh, I haven't even looked at the menu," Kai admitted, her cheeks flushing as she quickly opened it and scanned the options.
