"You look so sexy," Billie said with a grin, her voice soft and playful as she threw herself on the bed, watching Kai intently.
Kai was standing in front of the full-length mirror across the room, pulling her long hair back into a ponytail. She was focused, trying to get it tight enough to fit under the cap she had just set on the dresser. The hat, with the word "Security" stitched in bold letters, matched the loose black T-shirt she wore, which had the same word emblazoned across the back. Her black jeans hung low and baggy, completing the look.
Kai paused and smiled at Billie through the mirror, warmth spreading through her chest at the compliment. "Thanks," she said, her voice soft but filled with appreciation. She turned her head slightly, still adjusting the hat.
Billie, meanwhile, was scrolling through her phone, checking the time and messages from Greg. "Greg said he's pulling up soon," Billie announced, her voice casual as she slipped the phone into her pocket and leaned back on the bed.
"Okay," Kai responded, exhaling with a bit more confidence. Today was a big day—not just for Billie, who was gearing up for a small, intimate show, but for Kai too. Today, she'd be putting her security training into action, shadowing Billie's team to get a feel for what the job entailed. It was all new to her, but Kai had been looking forward to it all week.
Still, a bit of nervousness crept up. Kai glanced over at Billie, hoping to get a better sense of what to expect. "How is Greg? Like, is he laid back or more serious?" she asked, adjusting the cap again. "Tough?"
Billie sat up slightly, thinking for a moment before responding. "Hmm, Greg's not scary, if that's what you're wondering," she said, her tone light but thoughtful. "He's pretty laid back, but when it comes to work—especially sticking to a schedule—he gets super serious. But he's a nice guy overall. You don't have to worry about him."
Kai nodded as she walked towards billie, taking in her words as she tried to adjust her hat one more time. "I feel stupid in this hat," she mumbled, tugging at the brim in frustration.
Before Kai could fiddle with it anymore, Billie sat up on the edge of the bed and reached out, pulling her close by the waist. "Hey," Billie said, her voice gentle but firm as she took hold of Kai's hand to stop her from messing with the cap. "It's adorable. I promise."
Kai smiled down at her, Billie's reassurance making her feel more at ease. She let her hand drop away from the cap and rested it on Billie's shoulder instead.
"You ready? Feeling charged up for today?" Billie asked, her eyes scanning Kai's face to check in emotionally, knowing how big this moment was for her.
Kai nodded, her confidence returning. "Yeah, actually. I feel really good," she said with a smile, the nervous energy now turning into excitement. She rested both hands on Billie's shoulders, giving them a light squeeze.
"Well then," Billie said, standing up and interlocking her fingers with Kai's. "Let's go before Greg gets impatient." She gave a little laugh and grabbed her stuffed backpack from the bed.
The two of them headed downstairs together, their footsteps in sync as they moved quickly, Billie's hand still loosely holding onto Kai's. Just as they reached the front door, the sound of an engine pulling into the driveway signaled Greg's arrival.
Kai, in a surge of professionalism, sped up ahead of Billie, moving quickly to the van. She opened the back door for her, flashing a small smile as Billie climbed inside.
"Thank you," Billie said, giving Kai a quick wink as she hopped in.
Kai closed the door behind her and slid in next to Billie just as Greg turned around in his seat to acknowledge them. "What's up?" Greg said, his eyes shifting toward Kai in the rearview mirror, studying her for a moment.
