Billie shuffled under the covers, groaning as the doorbell rang, cutting through her lingering sleep. She cracked one eye open, squinting at the clock on her nightstand. It wasn't even 8 a.m. yet. With a deep sigh, she threw off her blanket and reached for the sweatpants she had left on the floor the night before.
"Coming!" she called out, her voice still thick with sleep as she hurried down the hallway, tying the drawstring of her pants as she went. Her hair was a tangled mess, but she didn't have time to care.
When Billie pulled the door open, she was greeted by Kai's amused expression. "Not a morning person, huh?" Kai smirked, her eyes flicking briefly over Billie's disheveled appearance.
"Sorry about that," Billie muttered, rubbing her eyes. "I was up late organizing my closet." She stepped aside to let Kai in, still shaking off the last remnants of sleep.
Kai strolled into the kitchen with a confident ease, setting her bag down on the counter. She began taking out swatches of material and organizing them neatly. Billie made her way over to the coffee maker, flipping it on with a yawn.
As Kai continued taking out the samples, she paused, her eyes lingering on Billie as she fumbled with the coffee maker, still half-asleep.
"Are you sure this is a good time? I can always come back later when you're more... awake," Kai said gently, a bit of concern creeping into her voice.
Billie blinked a few times, stifling another yawn as she poured water into the coffee maker. "No, no, it's fine," she said, shaking herself awake. "I've got to be up anyway, and this is perfect timing. I swear, I'm getting there," she added with a sleepy smile.
Kai gave her a skeptical look but nodded, pulling out the samples from her bag and spreading them across the counter. "Alright, if you're sure."
As the coffee began to brew, filling the kitchen with the rich, comforting aroma, Kai glanced up and began, "So, you were thinking darker tones for the stonework? Blacks, greys, with maybe a touch of white?"
"Yeah, something along those lines," Billie said, rubbing her face as she waited for the coffee to finish. The hum of the machine was soothing, and the smell of brewing coffee was slowly bringing her back to life.
Kai hesitated again, noticing Billie's dazed expression. "Are you sure you're up for this? I can seriously come back later if you're not ready. There's no rush."
Billie shook her head quickly, pouring water into the coffee machine as if it would help her snap out of it. "No, I promise. This is fine. Keep going. I'm awake."
Kai let out a small laugh, relaxing a bit. "Alright,"
she said as she picked up a sleek slab of dark grey stone with subtle veins of black running through it. "This one is closest to the photo you showed me—This one's a natural granite. It's durable, weather-resistant, and gives a modern but classic feel. It would definitely work with the sleek look you're going for." She placed it in front of Billie, letting her run her fingers over the texture. "It's a bit pricier but lasts forever."Billie traced her fingers over the cool, smooth surface of the granite, appreciating the weight and feel of it as she started to wake up. "I like this one," she murmured, though her voice still carried a trace of sleep.
Kai smiled faintly. "I thought you might." She then picked up another sample, this one lighter in color, almost white with soft grey marbling. "This is limestone. It's a bit more porous, so it'll need regular sealing, but it has a softer, more natural look. It could create a lighter, airier vibe, especially if you want something more casual for the patio space."
Billie studied the limestone, turning it in her hands and comparing it with the granite. "Hmm, I think I'm leaning towards something darker."
Kai nodded, like she had expected that. "There's one more option I want you to see," she said, pulling out a sample of deep, almost charcoal-black stone. "This is basalt. It's got a slightly rougher texture but it's fantastic for modern designs. It's slip-resistant, which is a bonus if you're planning to host a lot of people, and there's a chance the patio gets wet."
