It was a quiet and boring evening, in Bahameen's room the soft light from her lamp cast a warm glow in the room. She was lying on her bed, scrolling through her phone. Her eyes fixed at the mobile screen. She was checking statuses on a social media app when suddenly, a familiar face caught her eye.
It was him.
Ghazan.
The man who haunted her.
She had known him for years. He always like that cold and distant. She always pretended she didn’t like him, never cared for him but deep inside she felt something different that she never herself acknowledged.
Someone she knew had posted a picture of him in their story. Curiosity pulled her in and she tapped on it. As the image loaded, her heart raced a little. There he was with a bright smile that lit up the entire frame.
He never actually smiled in front of her but she has seen him smiling with others and she accepted, he had a killer smile.
He wore a simple black shirt and black pants. He was looking very handsome in all black. His thick hair falling on his forehead, the sunlight danced in his dark hair making it shine. His smile was very warm and genuine.
Bahameen couldn’t help but stare at his picture. The way his eyes sparkled showed a kindness she had always admired but never admitted.
In that moment, it felt like the whole world around her faded away.
"Ghazan sahb! Hain to ap bohat handsome" She said to herself.
(You are very handsome Mr. Ghazan)
She noticed the background of a park or a lawn filled with green trees and colorful flowers. It looked like a sunny day, and Ghazan seemed completely at ease. He was smiling with friends but in that crowd he stood out to her.
Nothing gained her attention except him. No one was as attractive as him.
Bahameen felt a mixture of emotions.
She wanted to look away, to pretend she didn’t feel anything, but she couldn’t. The image made her heart flutter. It was a reminder of all the times she had tried to hide her admiration.
"Maybe he’s not so bad after all" In her mind, she thought.
As she saved the picture to her phone, a smile crept onto her face. For just a moment, she allowed herself to dream about what it would be like to tell him how she felt, to show him that beneath her tough exterior was someone who had feelings for him.
The image of Ghazan’s smile would stay with her, lighting up her thoughts even long after the evening had turned to night.
She threw her mobile phone on the bed and stared at the ceiling.
His words from a few days echoed around her. He snapped at her for being reckless when taken her from the party and she was drunk.
"You are a stain on women's name" He spat at her.
"Thank you" She just laughed at his comment.
She hadn't seen him since that night and neither did she wish to.
She hated him.
"No, I can never like a man like you Ghazan Ali! You are the worst. I hate you! I have always and I will always hate you!" She said as if he was sitting next to her.
The moon outside her window was glowing just like Ghazan's face always glows.
The same face Bahameen Gardezi liked from the day but never acknowledged not only to him but also to herself.
"He hates you. There is just one connection between you and him, and that's hatred" She reminded herself before falling to sleep.
What does Bahameen want?
