June 29th, 1988
We're a couple of days away from our concert, which will be held on Friday. We have our hands full trying to finish our last song: we have the melody, but we don't have the lyrics.
"No ideas? Guys?" Sonny is snapping his fingers: a trashed notebook is sitting on his lap and he's fidgeting with the pen.
"No, sorry Sonny." Jax pats his shoulder. "I don't have anything good." Sonny growls in exasperation.
"We were supposed to be practicing the new song by now, not writing it." Sonny isn't as prideful right now when it comes to stress. He has a whole new personality. "Don't any of you have a theme... a slight idea?" I glance over at my own notebook. Last night I couldn't sleep and ended up writing some stuff down. Some lovey-dovey stuff I'm not proud of. However...
"I did some brainstorming last night." Three heads turn suddenly in my direction, their eyes locked on me with expectation. I hand Sonny my notebook full of cheesy verses.
"«Warm afternoon in June», huh..." Sonny's eyes move horizontally, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration. Then he raises his eyebrows. "Huh indeed... I think we can work with these." Sonny smiles.
"«I met someone I can't compare... to my life surrounded by despair.»" Jax reads out loud and I cringe automatically. "«There's so much I want to say or do... but my voice fades when I talk to you.»" Jax grins. "Oh, Holt, I never thought you were such a romantic."
"Well, someone had to be helpful." I shoot him a side-eye. "I never thought it would be used for a song, it's way too romantic for what we're used to playing."
"No, no, Holt..." Sonny is frantically writing in his notebook. "This is good. And I like the title, it stays on your head." I can see a few quatrains forming, lines of ugly handwriting filling the page. Sonny is now locked in his creative process. "We might have a song by the end of the afternoon."
We managed to put together a pretty decent song until we had to leave for our shift. We haven't yet played our new song; we want to debut it at the concert this Friday.
