June 27th, 1988
We skipped the morning at the beach to a morning in pajamas. Lexi has one of those JVC VHS players and some horror movies so we decided to watch some.
Needless to say, the house was dark and we had popcorn for breakfast.
I was feeling much better that day, now that the drugs had practically left my body. My mind was not racing anymore, I could recall most events from the night and my cold sweats had stopped.
"I'm leaving you girls for the day. Call the number on the counter if you need me, okay?" Lexi has been like an older sister to us these days: taking care of us and covering up the situation from our parents.
Speaking of parents...
"Aunt Lexi, can I call my mom?" I asked before she left the door.
"Sure. Have a nice day, girls!" She heads out the door while Avril selects our next movie.
"Do you want Chucky or Monkey Shines?" I get up and reach for the phone.
"Didn't those movies come out last year?"
"I think so, they're pretty new." She puts down Monkey Shines while I dial my mom's phone number.
"Hello. Laura Lockwood speaking." I heard my mom's voice approximately two seconds after it started calling.
"Hey, mom, it's Juniper."
"Oh, hello." I can hear her typing on her expensive keyboard. "Why are you calling?"
"I just wanted to let you know I'm doing good."
"Oh, hum..." She doesn't sound like she's listening to me. I decided to test her:
"I went to the hospital yesterday. I got sick and Lexi took me."
"Who is Lexi?" Her voice turns sharp, which makes me confused.
"It's Avril's aunt... Who we're staying with."
"Ah, okay." She's uninterested again, almost bored. "Look, Juniper, I'm a bit busy right now. Don't call me during office hours."
"It's pretty early..."
"It's early for you because you're on vacation." She cuts me off. "I'm working, Juniper. You should be more considerate." Her words are stingy and false, yet they still affect me like they were true.
"I'll take that into account. Goodbye, Mom."
"Goodbye, Juniper." The call ends after a loud «bang» hits my ears. I put the phone back and returned to the couch.
"Your mom is a bitch." Avril states, twisting her nose. "I could hear most of her words. I don't understand why she would treat you like that."
"She has always been like that, you know it." I dismiss her words, covering myself with a fuzzy blanket, despite it being 88ºF outside.
