The morning air was crisp as Leif and Ingrid made their way down to the stables, where Erik was making final preparations for his journey. The sky was just beginning to lighten, the first hints of dawn breaking over the horizon. Erik stood beside his horse, securing the saddlebags that held Meryna's message, along with letters from Leif and Ingrid, for Freydis. His face was calm, though anticipation shone in his eyes.
Leif approached first, clasping Erik's forearm in a familiar gesture. "It's a long ride to the north," he said, his voice steady. "Take care of yourself."
"I will," Erik replied with a nod. "But I'm more concerned about Freydis." He glanced at the saddlebags, laden with the messages meant to reach her. "She needs to hear from all of us."
Ingrid stepped forward, her hand resting lightly on her abdomen, where the first signs of her pregnancy were beginning to show. "She'll be glad to see you," she said, her smile touched with warmth. "And I hope these letters will remind her that she is always in our thoughts."
Erik returned her smile, his expression softening as he looked at her. "You're right," he said. "She'll need that. Especially with the baby on the way."
Leif's eyes followed the movement of Ingrid's hand, and he squeezed her shoulder gently. "I'm sure Freydis will be happy to know she'll soon have a new niece or nephew." He glanced at Erik.
Erik nodded. "I'll make sure she knows that," he promised. "I know your mother is anxious to know how she fares in Ekkila. And I've promised her I would to look after her."
"Tell her we miss her," Ingrid added, her gaze filled with a sisterly concern. "And let her know about the baby. She is still apart of this family... No matter how far away she is."
"I will," Erik replied. His tone carried a quiet resolve. Freydis had been on his mind constantly; the thought of her dealing with so much while so far from home had left him restless. If these messages could bring her even a small measure of comfort, he would deliver them with the utmost care.
Leif gave Erik a final clasp on the shoulder. "When you see her, give her all our love. And tell her that we'll be here waiting for her, whenever she's able to come visit."
With a final nod, Erik mounted his horse. The animal stirred beneath him, eager for the road ahead. He glanced back at Leif and Ingrid, standing together with hopeful expressions as they watched him prepare to leave. They raised their hands in farewell gesture as he took the reins and turned his horse northward.
The journey ahead was long, but it would be worth it. He would deliver Meryna's words, as well as Leif's and Ingrid's, making sure that Freydis knew she was not alone. And as the sun began to rise over the horizon, he rode with a heart full of purpose, determined to reach her, no matter the miles that lay between them.
