Steve stared out of the window at the sky in the meeting room of the compound, watching the rain fall on the windows. The videos of his sister getting tortured and experimented on were imprinted in his brain and his world felt like it had just been shaken up like a snow globe.
The rest of the team lingered around speaking in hushed voices. Bucky leant against the wall deep in thought. He could barely comprehend the fact that this girl, almost like a sister to him, was subjected to cruel torture and experimentation. Wanda Maximoff sat in a chair, her finger tracing patterns absent mindly on the table, lost in thought.
Bruce and Tony walked in and everyone in the room looked up.
"We've figured out where she got her powers from." Bruce said.
Tony casted up a hologram showing graphs and charts that Steve couldn't understand.
"These are the energy readings from Autumn's powers," Tony said, zooming up on one chart. "Absolutely off the charts. There's only ever been one item that matches that much power. This stone, found during WW2, by our dearest friend." He put up a picture of the Red Skull. "No one knows much about this stone. I'm not even sure we can call it a stone. It's such a small piece you'd barely realise its there until its the death of you."
Tony put up a picture of a small glowing purple speck. "This Cap, is the source of your sister's power." "Do you think it's like the Tessaract?" Bucky asked.
"Even powerfuller. But with no full knowledge, we're not too sure of the extent of its powers." Bruce said.
"We have to find her," Steve said. "We have no idea what Hydra is planning to do with her."
"You've seen the clips. She's dangerous, and not herself. Hydra's controlling her every move. We can't just get her, she'll kill us all in a second." Clint said.
"I could break into her mind using my powers and try to lift the control. I'm not sure how long I can though so whatever you'll do will have to be quick." Wanda said.
"and even if we do? Steve, I know she's your sister but shes a risk to all of us. Even if Wanda can lift the brainwashing, who knows what she'll be like from all the years of torture." Clint continued.
"I can't just do nothing. She's my sister." Steve said, his jaw tightning.
"We'll get her, don't worry. We just need a plan or else we're all gonna get ourselves killed." Sam said.
Nat nodded. "We'll need to be smart about this. Use every resource we have."
"We'll get her back." Steve said. "Whatever it takes."
The avengers made their way towards the Hydra base, the structure blending into the mountainside. The moonlight gave minimal light but enough to get around without being noticed. For weeks now they had been tracking Hydra to try and find Autumn. And now they had found her. They knew that behind the concrete walls laid Steve's sister, transformed into a living weapon.
Natasha's voice came in through the comms.
"The perimeter guards are light. They're not expecting us. It's the usual - drones, sensors, motion detectors."Tony's voice spoke. "There's a weak spot at the south side. We can make it if we're quick."
Steve nodded. "We go quiet. Take anyone out but can't raise a commotion." The rest of the avengers nodded and reached the south side of the base. Once they breached the base the group soldiered on, searching for any signs of Autumn. Inside the base the air felt cold and had an eerie tone to it. Machinery hummed in the distance and the air had traces of the smell of disinfectant. As they moved deeper in the facility the faint pulse of energy grew stronger, a low vibration type thing.
"Do you feel that?" Bucky asked, pausing in his tracks.
Steve nodded. "It's her." he said.
They got to the heart of the building, a massive chamber lined with advanced tech. In the center stood Autumn, her eyes glowing with purple energy. She was no longer the sister Steve knew from 1945. Her face was cold and distant and her body was rigid with tension but ready to fight. Steve had seen it all on videos but seeing it in person was even more heartbreaking. The air seemed to vibrate around her as her hands glowed a faint purple.
"Autumn!" Steve called out, his voice cracking slightly. He took a step forward, shield at his side. "Rogers . . ." Tony warned but Steve ignored him.
"Its me. Its steve."
Autumns face showed no change, just stayed the same cold cruel figure she was from hydra's brainwashing. Without a word she let out a burst of purple energy, sending a shockwave to the avengers giving no time for Steve to react and the force slammed into him, blasting him into a wall.
"She doesn't know who she is," Wanda murmured, her own red powers glowing at her fingertips. "I can feel it."
Tony spoke up. "Enough shenanigans. I'm taking her down."
"Tony no!" Sam cried out but it was too late. The minute Autumn saw the weapons being raised by tony the crackling purple energy intensified, wrapping around her body like a storm.
"Get back!" Steve shouted, scrambling to his feet.
Autumn's powers exploded outwards, sending out a wave of energy so strong the whole building shook. Lights flickered, alarms blared, and the walls groaned under the force of her power. The avengers barley managed to shield themselves as the machines exploded into a pile of rubble and metal shards flew through the air.
"we need to shut her down." nat said. "Wanda, can you break through?"
Wanda nodded. "I can try, but Hydras brainwashing is deep. That right there is layers and layers of control from many years."
She reached a hand out, her red power joining the purple of Autumns. Carefully, Wanda began peeling back the surfaces of mental control given by Hydra. Autumn's body shook and her eyes widened as memories began to surface - ones of her life before Hydra. Her house in Brooklyn, playing with bucky and Steve, riding her first bike. For a brief second, she was Autumn Rogers again, her hands dropping to her sides, the energy fading.
"Steve?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
But the peace was short lived and hydra's control kicked back in. Autumn screamed as the purple light intensified, crackling like a storm around her and enveloping the room and avengers. she was losing control again.
"Autumn please! I need you to fight this! You're stronger than they are!" Steve said, taking a step forward, reaching his hand out.
In a moment of terror and confusion, stuck in a tug of war between being free and hydra's mind control, Autumn took off, disappearing in a storm of purple energy.
Steve's hand dropped at his side as the purple energy dissapeared, leaving no trace of Autumn.
