A few days pass, the house quiet but filled with an unspoken tension. Every time the phone rings, it sends a jolt through me, through all of us. We've been holding onto hope, waiting for any news, any sign that things might return to some kind of normal.
It's late afternoon when the call finally comes. Marcus and I are sitting in the living room, the sunlight streaming through the windows, casting a warm glow that feels out of place with the heaviness in the air. My heart skips as the phone rings, and Marcus is the first to move, reaching for it with a trembling hand.
"Hello?" His voice is tight, on the edge of breaking, but he keeps it steady.
I watch him, my own nerves on edge, holding my breath as he listens. His eyes widen, and then relief floods his expression. He looks at me, and for a moment, he can't speak—he just nods, his lips curving into a shaky smile.
"Nora's awake," he whispers, his voice full of disbelief and overwhelming joy. "She's awake."
The words hit me like a wave, crashing over me in a rush of emotions. Relief, joy, and something close to gratitude all mix together, leaving me breathless. I feel tears prickling at the corners of my eyes, and I don't even try to hold them back.
Marcus hangs up the phone, his hands shaking as he turns to me, and before I can say anything, he pulls me into a tight hug. We hold each other, both of us trembling, the weight of the last few days slowly lifting.
"She's okay," he murmurs against my shoulder, his voice thick with emotion. "She's going to be okay."
I nod against him, my own tears falling freely now. "I can't believe it. I was so scared..."
He pulls back slightly, his hands gripping my shoulders as he looks at me, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "We need to go to the hospital. We need to see her."
I nod again, wiping at my cheeks. "Yes, let's go. Let's be there for her."
As we grab our things and head out the door, there's a new energy between us. The heaviness that had settled over the house seems to lift with every step, replaced by hope—hope for Nora, for all of us. The drive to the hospital feels long, but the anticipation keeps us moving forward, eager to see her, to hear her voice, to know that she's really okay.
When we finally arrive, Marcus leads the way, his pace quick, his steps determined. As we approach Nora's room, I feel my heart race with both excitement and nervousness. Marcus pushes open the door, and there she is—awake, sitting up in bed, looking tired but very much alive.
"Nora," Marcus breathes, his voice breaking as he rushes to her side.
She turns her head slowly, a soft smile spreading across her face as her eyes meet his. "Hey," she says, her voice raspy but warm. "Miss me?"
Marcus laughs through his tears, taking her hand gently in his. "More than you know."
I stand at the doorway, watching the reunion with my heart full. Seeing Marcus with her, seeing Nora awake and smiling—it feels like we've been given a miracle.
As the tender reunion between Marcus and Nora continues, the door quietly opens, and a doctor steps into the room. His expression is calm, but there's a sense of seriousness in the way he approaches. Marcus wipes his eyes and steps aside as the doctor walks closer to Nora's bed.
