I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of rustling outside. I turned over in bed to see Brenda still sleeping peacefully beside me. I gently ran my fingers through her dark hair, admiring the way the moonlight highlighted her delicate features. I leaned in and placed a soft kiss on her forehead, causing her to stir slightly.
"Babe, what's wrong?" Brenda mumbled sleepily, blinking her eyes open.
I smiled reassuringly at her. "Nothing, love. Just couldn't sleep. Go back to bed."
She yawned and snuggled closer to me. "Okay, wake me up if you need anything."
About 10 minutes later, Brenda was passed out asleep, so I carefully untangled myself from her embrace and got out of bed, grabbing a flashlight and a backpack. I tiptoed out of the room, not wanting to wake her up completely. I had a feeling that something was happening out there, something important that I needed to be a part of.
I made my way through the dark corridors of the Safe Haven, keeping my footsteps as quiet as possible. I finally reached the garage where Thomas, Newt, and Frypan were waiting with a jeep. They looked surprised to see me, but I simply shrugged and climbed into the backseat of the vehicle.
"Are you sure about this, Y/N?" Thomas asked quietly, glancing back at me with concern.
I nodded, my heart racing with excitement and fear. "I have to do this. I want to help."
We drove in silence, the only sound the hum of the engine and the occasional crunch of gravel beneath the tires. The night air was chilly, sending shivers down my spine. I gripped the edge of my seat, feeling a mixture of anticipation and dread building up inside me.
As we approached a tunnel that led out of the Safe Haven, I felt a sense of unease wash over me. The darkness seemed to swallow us whole as we drove deeper into its depths. The only light came from our flashlights, casting eerie shadows on the walls around us.
Suddenly, the jeep came to a screeching halt, and I heard Thomas curse under his breath. I peered out the window and saw a horde of cranks surrounding us, their bloodshot eyes gleaming in the darkness. Panic seized me, my heart pounding in my chest.
Frypan started the car, as a hoard of cranks followed behind, their rotting bodies, and their screeching made me shiver in fear.
Before I could react, the jeep was flipped over by a sudden impact. Glass shattered around me, and I felt myself being thrown from my seat. I landed hard on the ground, my head spinning as I struggled to regain my bearings. I heard Newt calling out to me, his voice laced with urgency.
"Y/N, are you okay? Can you move?"
I groaned in response, my body aching all over. Newt reached down and helped me out of the wreckage, pulling me to my feet.
Just when I thought all hope was lost, Brenda and Jorge appeared out of nowhere, guns blazing as they fought off the cranks. Brenda looked fierce and determined, her eyes locking onto mine with a mixture of relief and anger.
"What the hell were you thinking, sneaking out like that?" Brenda yelled over the chaos, grabbing my arm and dragging me towards safety.
I didn't have a chance to respond as she led me back to the Safe Haven, her grip tight and unyielding. When we finally reached the safety of the walls, Brenda pulled me into a bone-crushing hug, tears streaming down her face.
"I thought I lost you, Y/N. I thought I'd never see you again," Brenda whispered, her voice choked with emotion.
I hugged her back just as tightly, feeling the weight of her words settle over me. I realized then how much she truly cared for me, how much she needed me by her side. I knew then that I would do anything to protect her, to keep her safe from harm.
Brenda led me to a makeshift medical tent, where she gently tended to my wounds from the glass shards. Her touch was gentle and soothing, the warmth of her hands calming my racing heart. I watched as she worked, her brow furrowed in concentration.
"You scared me half to death, you know that?" Brenda said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I can't lose you, Y/N. I can't bear the thought of living without you."
I reached out and took her hand in mine, intertwining our fingers together. "I'm sorry, Brenda. I just... I wanted to help. I wanted to be there for you, for all of you."
Brenda looked up at me, her eyes filled with tears. "You don't have to prove anything to me, Y/N. You're already everything I could ever ask for. Just promise me you won't do something like that again. Promise me you'll stay safe."
I nodded, my heart swelling with love for her. "I promise, Brenda. I'll always stay safe for you. I'll always come back to you."
