I woke up to the sound of birds chirping and the warm sun shining through the windows of our shared hut in the Glade. I could hear the familiar sounds of the other Runners getting ready for their daily exploration of the Maze. I turned over in bed to snuggle closer to Minho, my boyfriend.
"Good morning, love," I whispered, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek.
"Morning, babe," he replied, pulling me closer to him. "Are you ready for another day in the Maze?"
I nodded, feeling excited yet nervous at the thought of what we might encounter out there. But as always, having Minho by my side made me feel safe and protected. We quickly got dressed in our Runner gear and made our way to the entrance of the Maze. I quickly ran over to the gardens and said goodbye to my brother Newt, before I ran back to the Maze entrance.
As we entered the vast walls of the Maze, I couldn't help but feel a sense of exhilaration and fear at the same time. The twists and turns of the Maze always kept us on our toes, constantly testing our agility and quick thinking skills. But we were determined to find a way out, to uncover the truth behind our existence in the Glade.
We ran for what felt like hours, our hearts pounding in our chests as we navigated through the Maze. Suddenly, we heard a low growl coming from behind us, making us stop in our tracks. Minho and I exchanged confused glances, as Grievers were known to come out at night, not during the day.
"What the hell is a Griever doing out here now?" Minho muttered, his grip on his spear tightening.
Before we could even react, the Griever emerged from the shadows, its grotesque figure looming over us. Minho grabbed my hand, his eyes filled with determination as we turned and ran as fast as we could, trying to outrun the monster behind us.
But it was no use. The Griever was faster, its mechanical legs propelling it forward with terrifying speed. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I looked back and saw it gaining on us. Panic surged through me, but I knew I had to do something, anything to save us.
I let go of Minho's hand and turned to face the Griever, hoping to distract it long enough for Minho to get away. I picked up a nearby rock and threw it at the Griever, hitting it square in the eye. It screeched in pain, momentarily stunned by the attack.
But my victory was short-lived. In its rage, the Griever lashed out and injected me with its venomous stinger. I screamed in agony as the liquid burned through my veins, spreading like wildfire through my body. I could feel my vision blurring and my limbs going numb as the Griever finally turned and ran off, satisfied with its revenge.
Minho was by my side in an instant, his hands shaking as he tried to steady me. "Y/N, no, no, no, hang on for me, you'll be okay," he whispered, his voice filled with fear and desperation.
I could see the concern in his eyes as he carried me back to the Glade, his footsteps echoing in my ears as darkness crept in at the edges of my vision. The other Gladers gathered around us, their faces a blur of worry and confusion as they rushed me to the med hut. Newt helped carry me to the med hut, and I was so thankful I would have my brother's support during the Changing.
I could hear the sound of footsteps and hushed whispers as they injected me with a serum, trying to counteract the effects of the Griever's venom. But I knew deep down that it would only be a temporary relief, that the pain would come back tenfold once the serum entered my bloodstream.
They tied me down to the bed, my body convulsing as the venom and serum coursed and mixed through my veins, my screams echoing in the small room. I thrashed against the restraints, tears streaming down my face as I fought against the agony tearing through me.
Through it all, Minho and Newt never left my side. They held my hand, and told me that I'd be okay, and that they wouldn't let me be banished from the Maze. "I'm sorry, baby, I'm so sorry," Mihno murmured, his voice thick with emotion.
I squeezed his hand, my anchor in a storm of pain and despair. I knew that the Changing was coming. The serum would give me back my memories that were unrecognizable to me in my current state.
The hours passed in a blur of agony and darkness, my body wracked with pain as the serum took hold. The memories flooding back into my brain, remembering my chuldhood with Newt, meeting Minho in WCKD, and a dark-haired girl who watched me being sent into the Maze. But through it all, Minho and Newt were there. They held my hands, whispering words of comfort and love as the Changing ravaged my body.
And when it was finally over, when the pain had subsided and I opened my eyes to see Minho's face looking down at me with tears in his eyes, I knew that I was home. I was safe in his arms, surrounded by the love and warmth that only he could provide.
"I love you, Minho," I whispered, my voice barely above a whisper.
"I love you too, Y/N," he replied, his voice filled with emotion. "I'll always be here for you, no matter what. We'll face whatever comes our way together, as a team."
As my days went past in the med hut, Minho, Newt and the others Gladers, even Gally, came to see me. When I made a full recovery, I was back to running the lengths of the Maze, side by side with Minho.
