As I walked through the front door of our small beach house, I was hit with a wave of exhaustion. My head was pounding, and my stomach churned with nausea. I had been sent home early from school that day, the familiar ache of sickness settling deep within me.
I called out for JJ, hoping he was home from school too. But instead of the sound of my brother's voice, I was met with the booming laughter of my dad, Luke Maybank. I grimaced, knowing that his drunken antics would only worsen my already fragile state.
"Ah, there's my disappointment of a daughter," Luke slurred, stumbling towards me with an empty bottle of whiskey in his hand. His breath reeked of alcohol, and I instinctively took a step back, trying to avoid his grasp. But it was too late. His hands latched onto my arm tightly, his grip bruising my delicate skin.
I winced in pain as he pulled me towards him, his eyes glazed over with intoxication. "You're just in time for a little lesson in respect," he sneered, his words slurred and harsh. I tried to struggle out of his grip, but his strength was overpowering.
The next half an hour was a blur of agony and fear. Luke's fists rained down on me, each blow sending waves of pain through my body. I cried out for mercy, tears streaming down my face as I pleaded for him to stop. But his drunken rage only seemed to intensify, his words slurred and full of venom.
Just when I thought I couldn't bear it any longer, the front door swung open, and in walked JJ. His eyes widened in horror as he took in the scene before him. "What the hell is going on?" he bellowed, his voice laced with anger and concern.
I tried to call out to him, to warn him to stay away. But before I could utter a word, Luke turned his rage towards JJ. The room filled with the sound of their clashes, grunts and punches echoing off the walls. I screamed for them to stop, my heart aching with the fear of losing either of them.
But JJ was relentless in his need to protect me. His fierce determination fueled his fighting spirit, his fists flying as he defended me from our drunken father. I tried to intervene, to shield JJ from harm, but my own body was wracked with pain. I could feel the bruises blooming across my skin, the ache of broken bones making every movement excruciating.
"JJ p-please." I cried, as Luke was going on the brink of passing out from the alcohol. He looked at me quickly with sympathy and concern for me.
"Hey, it's okay little sis, we'll go to the Chateau after this okay? You'll be safe, just hang on a little longer for me." JJ spoke, as Luke threw a punch in a drunken rage, which was easily dodged by JJ.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Luke collapsed to the floor in a drunken stupor. JJ stood over him, his chest heaving with exertion, his gaze filled with a mixture of rage and compassion. He quickly turned to me, his eyes softening with worry as he took in the state of my battered body.
"Come here Y/N, oh god, what did he do to you?" He spoke with his voice filled with emotion and worry.
Without hesitation, he scooped me up in his arms, cradling me against his chest as he hurried out of our house. He ran as fast as he could towards the Chateau, his feet pounding against the sand as he raced towards safety.
Once we reached the haven of the Chateu, JJ carried me past everyone, and left them confused as JJ laid me gently on his bed, then got up to close the door. He got the first aid kit from the bathroom then came back to treat my injures. His hands moving deftly as he tended to my wounds. I cried out in pain as he examined a bruise that covered the entirety of my abdomen and stomach.
"Jesus, Y/N, I'm so sorry I wasn't there sooner, I could've stopped this." JJ spoke with guilt laced in his voice.
He continued to clean and bandage my cuts and scrapes, his touch gentle and soothing against my tender skin. He placed ice packs on my bruises, easing the pain that throbbed throughout my body.
I looked up at JJ, tears streaming down my face as I tried to speak through the sobs that wracked my body. "I'm sorry, JJ," I whispered, my voice hoarse with pain and fear. "I didn't mean to cause trouble. I just wanted to protect you."
JJ's eyes softened with understanding as he brushed a stray tear from my cheek. "You have nothing to apologize for, sis," he murmured, his voice filled with love and reassurance. "You are not to blame for any of this. I will always protect you, no matter what."
