Sarah Chen's heart pounded as Jack's car sped through the winding roads of Northern California. The events of the past few hours felt like a surreal dream - the FBI raid, their narrow escape, and now, Jack's promise of the truth.
"Start talking," Sarah demanded, her hand never straying far from her concealed weapon.
Jack took a deep breath, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. "It all started five years ago. I was a rising star in the crypto world, developing new blockchain technologies that I thought would change the world. That's when the Blockchain Liberation Front approached me."
"The crypto-anarchist group you mentioned earlier?" Sarah asked.
Jack nodded. "They saw my potential and recruited me. At first, their ideology appealed to me - a world free from centralized control, where financial power was truly in the hands of the people. But as I got deeper, I realized the truth. They weren't interested in liberation. They wanted control."
Sarah's mind raced, trying to piece together the implications. "So you left?"
"I tried," Jack said, his voice tight. "But by then, I knew too much. They threatened me, my family. I had no choice but to go underground. That's when I started tracking their activities, looking for a way to bring them down."
"And that's how you got involved in my investigation," Sarah said, realization dawning.
Jack nodded. "When I saw the patterns emerging - the exchange hacks, the mining pool attacks - I knew it was them. But I couldn't go to the authorities directly. That's why I approached you."
Sarah's training warred with her instincts. Part of her wanted to believe Jack, but years of experience had taught her to be wary. "Why should I believe you now? How do I know this isn't just another lie?"
Jack's knuckles whitened on the steering wheel. "Because right now, we're the only ones who can stop what's coming next. The ransomware attack, the market manipulation - it's all building to something bigger. Something that could destabilize the entire global financial system."
"What are you talking about?" Sarah asked, a chill running down her spine.
"Have you heard of Nova Cash?" Jack asked.
Sarah frowned. "The new stablecoin? It's been all over the financial news lately. Supposedly the next big thing in crypto."
"It's a trojan horse," Jack said grimly. "The BLF has infiltrated the company behind it. They're planning to use Nova Cash to trigger a financial crisis that will make 2008 look like a hiccup."
Sarah's mind whirled. If Jack was telling the truth, the implications were staggering. "We need to warn someone. The FBI, the SEC-"
"We can't trust anyone in the government right now," Jack cut her off. "The BLF has moles everywhere. That's how they knew about the raid on my warehouse. Our only chance is to gather hard evidence and expose the whole operation ourselves."
Sarah was quiet for a moment, weighing her options. Every instinct screamed at her to turn Jack in, to go back to the FBI and sort this out through proper channels. But if he was right...
"Alright," she said finally. "What's our next move?"
Relief flooded Jack's face. "We need to get to San Francisco. I have a contact there who can get us access to Nova Cash's internal systems. If we can prove they're manipulating the stablecoin's backing, we can bring the whole house of cards tumbling down."
As they drove through the night, Sarah's phone buzzed incessantly. Messages from Mark, from her supervisor, from colleagues - all demanding to know where she was, what was going on. With a heavy heart, she turned the device off. There was no going back now.
