Loid sat at the kitchen table, his coffee untouched, deep in thought. Anya's sudden demand for a brother was more than just a childish outburst—it had real consequences for the mission. If she acted out at school, it could damage his carefully crafted plan to get closer to Donovan Desmond. But, as ridiculous as her request seemed, it could also be an opportunity.
A new family member, if handled properly, might actually help with Operation Strix. But how would he introduce the idea to Yor without raising suspicion? He needed to construct a backstory that was believable, something that fit seamlessly into their current life without causing too many questions.
Loid leaned back, analyzing the situation like any other mission. What if I say I've had a son all along, but he's been living with relatives? The idea began to take shape. It's not unusual for someone in my line of work to have a complicated family situation. A child who had been kept away for his own safety, or because he needed a stable home while I was working... that could be explained.
His mind raced through the details. The child could have been living with relatives, maybe overseas, where things were more stable. Loid could claim he didn't bring him into the picture sooner because he didn't want to overwhelm Yor, especially when they were just starting their new life together. It would make him seem considerate and cautious, qualities Yor would trust.
Yor won't question it if I position it carefully, Loid thought. He could present the situation as something he'd been struggling with for a while—a decision he'd been hesitant to make because it was such a big change. But now, with Anya settling into school, it was time to bring his son home. It would seem like a heartfelt decision, something he had carefully thought through.
Loid imagined the conversation. He would sit down with Yor, make it clear that this had been weighing on him for some time. He'd explain that the child had been with relatives to give him a stable life, but now it was time to reunite the family. If I frame it right, Yor will sympathize. She'll see it as me opening up, trusting her with something deeply personal.
He could say the child had been living with an aunt or uncle—someone who had provided a safe and stable environment while Loid was focused on his work. Now, with his "psychiatry" career more settled, it made sense for the boy to come live with his father. Yor's maternal instincts will kick in, he thought. She'll feel like it's her duty to welcome him into the family.
But the story needed more layers. He would have to anticipate every question Yor might ask. Why now? Why hadn't I mentioned him before? Loid tapped his fingers on the table, thinking through his answers. He could say that the child had just finished school abroad, or perhaps the relatives he'd been living with were no longer able to care for him. Either way, the timing needed to seem natural, as if it were all falling into place now.
I'll tell her it's been difficult for me to talk about—something I've kept private because I didn't want to burden her. But now that we've settled into our life together, I feel it's time to bring him home. She'll see it as a sign of trust, that I'm ready to fully commit to this family.
Loid's thoughts drifted to Anya. He would need to prepare her as well. He'd have to present the situation in a way that made sense to her—a surprise, something special to help her at school. If she thought having a brother would improve her relationship with Damian, she'd be more than willing to go along with the plan.
This could actually work, Loid realized, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. A second child would not only satisfy Anya but also strengthen our cover as a family. It would make us appear more natural, more complete. And if it helps her connect with Damian, it brings me one step closer to Donovan Desmond.
His mind raced with the possibilities. The backstory would have to be solid, but Loid had crafted far more elaborate deceptions before. This was just another role to play, another piece in the puzzle. He'd give Yor enough details to believe the story, but not so much that she'd feel the need to dig deeper.
The key would be timing. He couldn't rush it, but he couldn't wait too long either. If he made the announcement tonight, it would seem like something that had been weighing on him for a while, something he'd finally found the courage to share.
Yor will understand, he thought. She's compassionate, and she's already shown how much she cares for Anya. She'll welcome the idea of bringing another child into the family, especially if I make it clear that this is something I've been struggling with.
Loid stood up from the table, his plan solidified. The backstory was airtight, the timing perfect. Now, all that was left was to put it into motion. By tomorrow, he thought, our family will have one more member—and the mission will be that much closer to success.
Hopefully.
