The Forger household was abuzz with activity as Loid prepared for the day ahead. Anya's cheerful voice echoed through the hallway, followed by the rhythmic clattering of her shoes against the floor. He had made a point to wake early and prepare breakfast, wanting to create a sense of normalcy for the new family dynamic.
As he scrambled eggs in the kitchen, he couldn't shake the feeling of anticipation swirling within him. Today would be the first test for Kaito, and Anya would have to adjust to having a big brother around. With Yor away at work, it was essential that Anya and Kaito bond to ensure she would accept him too.
"Good morning, Papa!" Anya chirped, her pink hair bouncing as she entered the kitchen. Her eyes were bright, clearly excited about the day ahead.
"Good morning, Anya. I hope you're ready for a big day," Loid replied, trying to infuse enthusiasm into his voice. "Kaito will be joining us for breakfast, and I want you to make a good impression."
Anya's eyes widened, her expression shifting from excitement to confusion. "Kaito? Is he a puppy? Can I pet him?"
Loid chuckled softly, ruffling her hair. "Not quite. He's your new big brother."
Anya's face lit up again. "A brother? Like the ones in my stories?" She make a..concerning face that make him reconsider alot.
"Yes, just like that. But remember, he might not be exactly like the characters in your stories," Loid cautioned, making sure to set the right expectations. "You need to be kind and welcoming."
"Okay!" Anya grinned, her excitement bubbling over.
Just then, Kaito entered the kitchen, he had slept in the guest room that previous night, his hair ruffled and his Pjs - which were just Loid's old shirt, slipped off his shoulders. Despite all that his expression remained stoic but polite. "Good morning," he greeted, eyeing the spread of breakfast laid out on the table.
"Good morning, Kaito!" Anya said brightly, bounding over to him. "Do you like eggs? They're super yummy!"
Kaito hesitated for a moment, studying the eager girl before him. "Yeah, they're fine," he replied, his tone guarded but polite. He sat down at the table, glancing at Loid for a cue.
Loid watched as Anya enthusiastically filled her plate with food. "We need to fuel up before the day, right?" she said, beaming.
"Right," Kaito replied, a slight chuckle escaping him.
"Can we play soccer later?" Anya asked, her eyes sparkling with hope. "You can teach me how to kick the ball like a superhero!"
"I guess so," Kaito said, a hint of warmth creeping into his tone. "But superheroes don't just kick. They train hard."
Anya nodded vigorously, fully absorbing his words. "I can train! I'll be the best superhero ever!"
As breakfast continued, Loid couldn't help but feel a swell of pride watching Anya and Kaito interact. This could work, he thought, carefully observing their exchanges. Kaito's stoic demeanor complemented Anya's energetic spirit.
After breakfast, Loid gathered both children for their plans. "Today, I want to take you both to the park. It'll be a good opportunity for you two to bond and for Anya to see what kind of skills you have, Kaito."
Anya clapped her hands, practically vibrating with excitement. "Yay! Park time!"
"Sounds fine," Kaito said, his expression neutral as he followed Loid's lead. "Just no running into the street."
Anya giggled. "I promise! No running!"
After breakfast, they made their way to the park. The air was crisp and invigorating, a perfect day for outdoor activities. Anya dashed ahead, her laughter ringing through the trees, while Kaito kept a watchful eye on her.
"Don't wander too far, Anya!" Kaito called after her, his voice tinged with an instinct that surprised even him.
Loid observed the interaction, a satisfied smirk appearing on his face. This is good. Kaito is adapting quickly, and Anya is responsive to his presence.
Once they reached the park, Anya immediately ran toward the playground, her energy infectious. "Come on, Kaito! Race you to the slide!"
"Wait!" Kaito called, a hint of annoyance creeping into his voice as he jogged after her, trying to keep pace. "You need to slow down or you'll fall!"
Loid chuckled softly to himself, watching the two interact. Perhaps this brother-sister dynamic could blossom into something beneficial.
As Kaito reached the playground, he caught up with Anya, who was already climbing up the slide. "You're supposed to go up the stairs, not the slide!" he admonished, trying to maintain his serious facade.
"I'm a superhero!" Anya declared, sliding down with a shriek of joy. "Superheroes don't follow the rules!"
Kaito sighed, trying to suppress a smile. "Well, maybe superheroes should learn some rules too."
Loid approached them, leaning against a nearby bench, arms crossed with a satisfied expression. "Looks like you're both getting the hang of this. Just remember, teamwork is key."
"I'll teach him how to be a superhero!" Anya exclaimed, grabbing Kaito's arm and dragging him toward the swings.
"Okay, okay," Kaito said, chuckling as he relented. "But I'm still going first."
This is working better than I anticipated. A little brother-sister rivalry and some friendly banter could create a bond that Anya desperately needs.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden hue over the park, Loid felt a sense of calm wash over him. The mission was still on his mind, but for the moment, he allowed himself to enjoy the sight of Anya and Kaito sharing laughter and play.
"Let's head home," he called out, signaling the end of their outing. "We have dinner to prepare, and I expect both of you to help out."
"Can we make spaghetti?" Anya asked, bouncing on her heels.
"I suppose," Loid replied, nodding. "But only if you both promise to clean up after."
"Deal!" they shouted in unison.
As they walked home, Kaito fell into step beside Anya, who was regaling him with stories of her day at school. Loid walked slightly ahead, surveying the street as he contemplated his next move in this intricate game they were all playing.
So far, so good, he thought, a small smile creeping onto his face. But I need to ensure that it stays that way. This is only the beginning of what's to come.
After all. Yor was yet to come home.
