When they were a young filly, they always craved attention, which is something they would never experience. That craving made them do such things for attention. Even to sacrifice a life from somepony they loved. You can say they already did.
They grew up, not knowing what it was like to have a taste of being humbled.
When they found out about the "Maze Teamwork Game", they found another way to catch attention.
To sacrifice the life of their dear friend. Which they regret deeply. This led to pure guilt washing over them.
As an atonement for sacrificing their friend, they decided to stay in the depths of the maze, living every second of their life regretting what they did.
The only memory they have of their friend now is the scarf they're wearing.
