Tomcat keeps his right hand on my back as we make our way to the center of the road, back where the police cruiser was and where ambulances, new police cars, three large pickup trucks, and the medical van are now waiting for us. Colorful lights flash and headlights beam through the pouring rain, and Tomcat leads me through the mess as if he can see perfectly fine. Fika walks right beside me, but I'm sure if I had enough space between my legs while walking, he'd walk there instead.
"Yo, Tweety," Tomcat says as he smacks the driver's side door of the medical van while we pass. "Get us into town."
"On it, Boss," Tweety says, skillfully climbing over the center console while Tomcat leads me to the back of the van. The doors are already open and the light inside is on, but no one is in there.
"Hop in," Tomcat commands, but I can't bring myself to go just yet.
"Javi?" I yell, turning around while trying to focus on one thing at a time. "Javier?"
"Here!" I turn to see the man running around an ambulance, his eyes already searching for me. When he spots me and Tomcat, he jogs over and lays a hand on my left shoulder, sandwiching me between him and my partner. "You alright?" he asks this after looking into my eyes for a moment, and I can't help but think he's seeing something I'm desperate to hide.
"Yeah," I breathe, "come on, we've got places to be."
With that, I break free of the two of them and climb into the van, whistling at Fika to join me. The Aussie leaps up into the back of the vehicle and I take a wide stance so he can position himself between my calves, leaning on me for support.
When I look back at the two, I find Tomcat smiling proudly while Javi looks up at me in some kind of dazed amazement.
"Come on," I prompt, "we don't have all day."
"Yes, ma'am," Tomcat replies, grabbing onto the handle with his left hand and hoisting himself in.
"I can come?" Javier asks, almost as if he's baffled I'd let him tag along.
"You want to help people, don't you?" I question, and the Storm Par co-owner climbs into the van so quickly you'd think the ground was disappearing beneath his feet.
He and Tomcat close the doors and I grab onto the handlebar above my head as Tomcat walks to the front and opens the screen separating us from Tweety. "We're all set. Get into town."
"How many people were still trapped?" I ask, turning to Javier as he grabs the handlebar as well.
"We found six or seven on this side of the pileup," he replies, looking at Fika, who is panting as he leans against me. "All awake, all responding. Jaws of life will have them out in no time."
The van starts moving and Fika barks twice, stumbling from one of my legs to the other. I quickly let go of the handlebar and press on him until he lays down. Then, I drop to one knee and let him lay down in the space beneath my other leg. He's still breathing heavy, and his ears are up.
"Hang on!" Tweety warns, and the van bounces and jolts, sending me nearly crashing into the stretcher in the middle of the space. I manage to get my hand out before I hit it, but the harsh movements continue on for several seconds.
In fact, they continue on for long enough that Javi side-steps and grabs my shoulder with one hand, holding me in place while he relies on the handlebar above his head.
