Trigger Warnings: Cursing, Mentions of trauma, Intense moments
"So, you told Tyler to go after the wrong storm cell?" I ask as I climb into the back of Javier's Storm Par truck. Tucker— we're off-duty now, so nicknames are not necessary— climbs in on the other side and shuts his door in time with mine. Kate is already in the passenger seat, smiling to herself as Javier starts the engine.
"I did," she confirms, looking back at me with pride shining in her eyes. "And we'll just have to hope he took the bait." Javier begins driving as I respond.
"He knows more about tornadoes than he might let on," I warn her, but she just shrugs her shoulders and turns back around to face forward. "So, we're chasing a storm cell hoping it drops a tornado, and once we do... what happens?" I look between Javier and Kate, willing to take an explanation from either one of them.
"The updraft is cycling," Kate points out before Javier can explain the plan. Tucker and I lean towards our windows, looking up at the dark clouds in the sky. "Take a right up here."
Javier follows her orders, taking a right at the next available point. I look back to find the three other vehicles still following us. Part of me begins to feel excitement rush through my veins, but the other part is terrified of what Dom and Fika are thinking right now. It's not like we haven't been apart before, but I don't know how long this chase is going to last, and they know it's storming. If we're out here for a long time, will they think I've abandoned them? Or maybe that I've gotten hurt in the storm?
"Bonnie? You listening?" Javier asks, and I snap out of my concerns to look over at the driver.
"What?" I question, glancing at Tucker.
"You heard none of that?" Kate gasps, looking back at me. "What the hell are you thinking about back there?"
"My dogs," I admit sheepishly.
Javier laughs and calls on the radio for Tinman and Scarecrow to get into position. They confirm this command and then our group breaks into groups of two, our truck heading right with the wizard van right behind while the other two turn left and head down a side road that leads them away.
"Well, that gives me a chance to elaborate," Javier says, glancing over at Kate with a smile. "Anyways. We need to get three radars up around the vortex to make it 3-D, right?"
"Right," Kate confirms, glancing back at me to make sure I'm still listening. I give her a short nod and a slight smile.
"Tinman will get behind the tornado and plant a radar on the right-hand side. Scarecrow will plant one on the left-hand side. All the data they send once the scanners are up will be sent to the Wizard," Javier explains, and I nod my head slowly.
"Wait, what about Lion?" Kate asks, and Tucker glances over at me as I sneak a peek at him. Javier clears his throat before continuing.
"We have to complete the triangle," Javier states, and Kate's breath hitches in her throat. "We have to plant ours right in front of it."
"Oh my god," I whisper, covering my mouth and turning to look out the window as fear starts to set in. Tucker reaches over and grabs onto my left hand, pressing it down into the center back seat.
"You got this, Kate," Javier encourages the ex-storm-chaser with a calm voice. "Just tell us where the front of the tornado is." Kate nods slightly, her right hand holding onto the door with so much desperation that her knuckles start turning white. I can see it from where I'm sitting, and it's sickening.
"I would've liked to know that before I agreed to get in this truck, Rivera," I hiss, reverting back to calling Javier by his last name. He glances over to the center console, but not all the way back to where I'm sitting. I am right behind Kate while Tucker is behind Javier.
