After running to the grocery store and picking up several cases of water and bags of ice, our three cars pack up and head northbound. We hop from town to town for several hours, but just before Seth calls us to let us know he and Alexis made it home, we stop at a gas station to fill up all of our vehicles.
My gas tank fills first, and while I wait for the others, my phone starts ringing. I pick it up to find Seth's name and immediately click the answer button.
"Hey," I chime.
"Hey," he replies quickly, "we just made it home. Um... there's something you should know."
My blood runs cold as my hand grips onto my phone.
"What?" I ask hesitantly.
"We're under a tornado watch," he says softly, "the outbreak spread up to the northeast unexpectedly overnight. The nearest one was only thirty miles away."
No, no, no.
That can't be right.
"Oh my god," I breathe, my lungs tight and my chest heavy. "Oh my god..."
"It's okay, Bonnie," Seth states, "I'm here with them. If anything happens, I'll be here. I'm gonna stay here."
"Okay... okay..." I reply, my voice shaking as I close my eyes.
That's okay.
He's okay.
We're okay.
"I know the farm like the back of my hand, Bonnie. If anything bad happens, I know where the shelters are, and I know what to do. I can handle it. I just wanted to make sure you knew," he says gently, and I nod even though he can't see me. When I open my eyes again, tears slip out and my breaths become uneven and sharp.
I bought the farm because it was out of the way of tornadoes.
It was in the perfect spot.
I guess nothing's perfect for forever, huh?
"Please be safe," I whisper.
"I will be," he assures me. The softness in his voice reminds me of the little boy I met when we were both younger than ten. The little boy who loved race cars and always said he wanted to drive one someday. He was so small and quiet back then. Now he's definitely not small and he's gotten quite a bit louder.
"How's Alexis?" I ask, leaning back in my seat as Dom yawns behind me.
"She's asleep. I just got her inside. She didn't think she could make it up the stairs, so we compromised and she's sleeping on the couch. I'll try and move her to a bedroom in a bit, I just don't think she's up for it right now. She says it hurts in her spine," he explains. I nod my head, pressing my lips together firmly.
"She needs rest. Call Oliver, let him know what's going on," I say, knowing Seth still has Oliver's phone number from when we were all teenagers. Our friend group was inseparable back then. Seth, Oliver, me, and a girl named Lola who lived seven houses down. Sometimes I wonder where she went.
"I probably won't tell him to come get her until after the outbreak is over. I don't want either of them driving in dangerous conditions," Seth replies.
"That's okay, but you still need to call him," I state, and he quickly agrees.
"Yeah, yeah! I'm not saying I won't call him; I'm just saying I'm going to tell him to wait to drive down here," Seth defends himself.
