Lily clung to Severus as the green flames of the fireplace flared once again. Her heart pounded, her mind still reeling from all that had just happened. She was a witch. Her father was a murderer. And now, she had killed someone too—accidentally, but still, she couldn’t shake the horror of it.
“I killed her…” Lily muttered again, her voice small and broken. She could still see the maid's lifeless form on the floor, the memory burning into her mind like the fireball still flickering in her hand.
“Shhh…” Severus gently pried her arms from around him, kneeling to look her in the eye. “You didn’t mean to, Lily. It was an accident.” His voice, though firm, carried a hint of warmth she hadn’t heard before. “And that’s why you’re coming with us, to learn to control your power. You’ll be safe at Hogwarts.”
Lily nodded shakily, her wide eyes still filled with fear. She turned to Dumbledore, whose kind face softened as he approached.
“Hogwarts is a place where you’ll learn more about who you are, Lily,” Dumbledore explained softly, his hands folded before him. “You won’t have to worry about being hurt there. And Severus will be there, as will I, to guide you.”
“But… what about my father?” Lily asked, her eyes darting to the floor. “He said he’d come back for me. That I’m important to him.”
Dumbledore sighed, a deep sadness touching his features. “Your father, Lord Voldemort, has caused great pain to many, including your mother. He may believe he cares for you, but his love is twisted by his thirst for power. You’ll need to decide for yourself where your loyalties lie, Lily, and I hope you’ll come to see the truth.”
Lily looked confused, her emotions tugging her in two directions. “But he saved me…” she whispered, though her voice lacked conviction. She thought of the snake, of the promise he’d made to protect her, yet even as she tried to justify it, something felt wrong.
“I know this is all overwhelming,” Dumbledore said, placing a hand on her small shoulder. “You don’t have to make any decisions today. But for now, let’s get you to a place where you’ll be safe.”
Severus stood and straightened his robes, nodding at Dumbledore. “We should leave soon. The Ministry will want to know about the incident.”
Lily felt a pang of fear. “Are they… are they going to take me away? Because of… because of what I did?”
“No,” Severus said firmly. “No one is taking you anywhere, not while I’m here.”
The fire in the hearth roared to life, and Dumbledore extended his hand to Lily. “We’ll travel by Floo Powder,” he explained, guiding her toward the fireplace. “Hold tight, and don’t let go.”
Lily hesitated, glancing one last time at the maid’s body, then back at the two wizards who had promised her safety. With a deep breath, she took Dumbledore’s hand. Severus stood on her other side, his hand resting gently on her shoulder, a silent reassurance.
Dumbledore threw a handful of powder into the fire, which erupted into green flames. “Hogwarts!” he called out clearly, and in an instant, the room spun out of focus.
Lily felt herself being pulled through a whirlwind of colors and shapes, the sensation both dizzying and strange. She clung to Dumbledore’s hand, eyes squeezed shut, until she felt solid ground beneath her feet once more.
When she opened her eyes, she gasped in awe.
They stood in the middle of an enormous, ancient-looking hall, filled with floating candles, enchanted banners, and the soft glow of moonlight filtering through tall windows. The air buzzed with magic, and for a brief moment, Lily forgot her fear.
“Hogwarts,” Dumbledore said with a smile. “Welcome home, Lily.”
Lily’s mouth fell open as she took in the sight. The Great Hall stretched endlessly, its enchanted ceiling showing the night sky filled with stars. She’d never seen anything like it. For a moment, the fear and confusion that had plagued her all day melted away, replaced by wonder.
“You live here?” Lily asked, glancing up at Severus.
Severus smirked slightly. “I do. And now, so will you.”
Dumbledore gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze. “There is much you’ll learn here, Lily, about magic, about yourself. But for tonight, let’s find you a place to rest.”
Lily nodded, suddenly feeling the weight of exhaustion settle over her. She’d been through so much in such a short time, and the idea of sleep seemed like the only thing she could handle.
As they made their way down the long corridors of the castle, Lily couldn’t help but glance around, her mind still spinning. This was her new life, a world of magic, wizards, and witches. She didn’t know what would come next, but one thing was certain—nothing would ever be the same.
As they reached a staircase that seemed to move on its own, Severus paused, his hand still resting on her shoulder. “Lily,” he said quietly, his dark eyes meeting hers, “you’ll be safe here. No one will hurt you. Not as long as I’m around.”
Lily looked up at him, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. She nodded, feeling the first hint of comfort she’d felt in what seemed like forever.
Dumbledore stopped in front of a grand door, pushing it open to reveal a cozy room lit by a warm fire. “You can stay here tonight, Lily,” he said gently. “Tomorrow, we’ll begin to explore what lies ahead.”
Lily stepped inside the room, glancing back at Severus one last time before walking in. As the door closed behind her, she felt a strange mixture of relief and uncertainty. This place was nothing like the orphanage, nothing like the life she’d known.
She climbed into the soft bed, pulling the covers up to her chin. As she lay there, staring at the ceiling, she thought about everything that had happened. The maid. The green fire. The snake.
Her father.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she remembered his voice, his promises, and the scar on her neck. She didn’t know what to believe anymore. She didn’t know who she was supposed to trust.
But as she closed her eyes, the warmth of the fire flickering beside her, she made herself a promise.
She would find out. One way or another, she would uncover the truth.
And when she did, she would decide her own fate.
