The Great Hall of Hogwarts was as magnificent as ever, illuminated by thousands of floating candles that reflected off the enchanted ceiling, which mimicked the night sky. Students and staff buzzed with excitement as the first years were ushered in.
Lily stood in a line of nervous first years, her heart racing. She could feel the weight of everyone’s gaze, but there was comfort in knowing that Draco was nearby, sharing the same apprehension.
The Sorting Hat, an ancient artifact with a tattered exterior, sat on a stool at the front of the hall. As the name of each student was called, the hat would sing its song and then announce the house to which the student belonged.
“Malfoy, Draco!”
Draco took a deep breath and stepped forward, trying to project confidence as he approached the hat. He felt the familiar weight of expectation on his shoulders, his father’s legacy looming large. The hat fell over his eyes, and he heard a voice whispering in his ear.
“Ah, a Malfoy, ambitious and cunning... but there’s more to you, isn’t there? A longing for friendship, perhaps? Where shall I place you?”
“Get on with it,” Draco urged impatiently, a hint of nervousness breaking through his bravado.
“Very well,” the hat chuckled. “Slytherin!”
Draco straightened as cheers erupted from the Slytherin table, a sense of pride swelling within him. He took his seat among the familiar faces, his gaze flicking back to Lily, who was next in line.
“Potter, Harry!”
The room fell silent as Harry stepped up. All eyes were on him, a mixture of awe and curiosity. He placed the hat on his head, and it barely took a moment before it called out, “Gryffindor!”
The Gryffindor table erupted into applause, welcoming Harry with open arms. As he joined them, Ron Weasley followed closely behind, and soon Hermione Granger’s name was called. The sorting went by quickly, and each student seemed to fit neatly into their respective houses, except for one.
“Riddle, Lilyanala!”
Lily approached the stool, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel the weight of every eye in the hall upon her, including the curious stares of the Golden Trio. She sat down, and the hat was placed on her head, slipping down over her eyes.
“Hmm... interesting,” the voice echoed in her mind. “So much potential. Courage, cunning, intelligence, and loyalty all swirling together. Where to put you, my dear?”
Lily frowned, feeling a mix of anxiety and confusion. “What do you mean?” she whispered, her thoughts racing. “I just want to fit in somewhere.”
“You could thrive in Gryffindor, with your courage. Or Slytherin, with your ambition. Ravenclaw, with your intelligence. Hufflepuff, with your loyalty. Each house has something to offer you. But there’s something more...”
“More?” she asked, her heart racing.
“Yes, indeed. You have a unique spirit that doesn’t quite fit in one box. You’re a blend of them all. But how can you possibly choose?”
Lily thought for a moment, her mind whirling with images of her friends, of her time with Severus and Albus, of the loneliness she had felt growing up. “I don’t want to choose! Can’t I be all of them?”
“An unprecedented request,” the hat mused. “But I can sense your strength and complexity. Very well, I will honor your wish, but it will confuse them.”
With that, the hat shouted out, “All four houses!”
The hall fell into a stunned silence. Whispers erupted as students exchanged confused glances. The Golden Trio looked on in shock, Ron’s jaw dropping open while Harry and Hermione shared a bewildered look.
“What does that even mean?” Ron murmured. “Can she sit at all four tables?”
“Is that even possible?” Harry asked, trying to make sense of it.
“Riddle!” Professor McGonagall called out, still standing next to the hat, clearly flabbergasted by the result.
Lily blinked, unsure of what to do. The hat was removed from her head, and she glanced back at Severus and Albus, who stood off to the side, their expressions revealing a mix of pride and concern. Without hesitation, she walked towards them, her heart pounding as she took a seat beside her two guardians.
“Wait, what? She can’t just sit there!” Draco exclaimed from the Slytherin table, frustration clear in his voice. “That’s not how it works!”
Lily turned to look at him, her heart racing. “I can’t help it! I didn’t choose this!”
“It’s not fair!” Draco argued, crossing his arms in frustration. “You should be with one of the houses!”
Albus stepped forward, his calm demeanor reigning in the growing tension in the hall. “Now, now, everyone. We are witnessing something extraordinary. Lilyanala’s abilities and background place her in a unique position. She embodies the best of all houses, and that is something to celebrate, not contest.”
The murmurs of the students grew louder, excitement mixed with skepticism. Severus leaned down closer to Lily, his expression softening. “You’re unique, Lily. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”
She nodded, a mix of nerves and relief flooding through her. The Hall was still watching her, but now it felt less like scrutiny and more like curiosity.
“Is that really how it works?” Hermione asked, her brow furrowed in thought. “Can someone truly belong to all houses at once?”
“I believe so,” Albus replied thoughtfully. “Every individual possesses qualities that may resonate with different houses. It is the choices we make that shape who we are.”
“Then that’s what I’ll do,” Lily declared, her voice steadying. “I’ll show everyone that I can be part of all of them.”
With that, the sorting ceremony continued, but the atmosphere in the Great Hall had changed. Conversations buzzed around her as students processed what they had witnessed. Lily felt a surge of determination and excitement fill her.
Maybe Hogwarts would be different than she had imagined. Maybe, just maybe, she could create her own path, one that blended the best of each house, under the watchful guidance of Severus and Albus.
As the feast began, laughter filled the air, and Lily settled comfortably between her guardians, stealing glances at Draco, who was still grumbling at the Slytherin table but looked undeniably intrigued.
For the first time in her life, Lily felt that she belonged—not to one house, but to all of them.
