The morning air at Hogwarts had a biting chill as students made their way toward the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. It was just after the Dementor attack on the train, and the entire school buzzed with whispers and rumors about Harry fainting in front of the whole compartment. Lily had been avoiding those whispers as much as she could, but they followed her nonetheless, crawling into every conversation, lingering in every corridor.
She walked quietly down the hallway, her eyes on the floor, trying to keep her mind focused on anything other than the ache that had settled in her chest. Draco had been keeping his distance lately, which was both a relief and a burden. She had tried to focus on other things—her studies, her strange attachment to Lupin, even her own magical abilities—but nothing truly distracted her from the whirlwind of emotions inside.
As she turned a corner near the entrance to the Great Hall, Lily’s attention was drawn to a familiar voice—sharp, mocking, and unmistakably Draco’s.
"Potter! Is it true, you actually fainted?" Draco's voice rang out across the hall, echoing with cruel amusement.
Lily’s steps faltered, and she instinctively turned toward the sound. There was Draco, standing with his usual entourage of Crabbe and Goyle, facing off with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Harry’s jaw was set in a hard line, his green eyes narrowed in frustration, but he didn’t respond to Draco’s taunt. Ron, however, looked ready to throw a punch, while Hermione was pulling him back.
Lily’s heart clenched at the scene. She couldn’t stand watching Draco treat Harry this way, not when Harry had no idea who she really was, no idea of the connection they shared. The guilt gnawed at her, twisting in her stomach like a knife. She had to say something.
"Draco, leave him alone," Lily called out, her voice sharp as she walked toward them.
Draco’s smirk faded slightly as he glanced toward her. There was a flicker of surprise in his eyes, but he quickly masked it with his usual arrogance. "Oh, look who it is," he sneered, crossing his arms. "Come to defend Saint Potter, have you?"
Lily stepped closer, her heart pounding in her chest. "Just leave him alone, Draco," she repeated, her voice firm.
Harry’s eyes flicked toward her, confusion crossing his face. It wasn’t often that Lily intervened in these confrontations, especially not in front of everyone. But this time, she couldn’t stand by.
Draco’s smirk deepened as he studied her. "What’s the matter, Lily?" he drawled, his tone laced with mockery. "Feeling protective of your precious Harry?"
Lily stiffened, feeling a sharp pang of panic. Draco didn’t know the truth about her and Harry, but he was getting dangerously close to it. She forced herself to stay calm, though inside, her thoughts were spiraling. "I’m not protective of anyone," she said coldly. "I just don’t see the point in picking fights for no reason."
Draco narrowed his eyes, sensing her discomfort. He took a step closer to her, lowering his voice just enough for only her to hear. "You’re always so quick to defend him, Lily. Why is that? It’s almost like there’s something you’re not telling me."
Her heart skipped a beat, and she swallowed hard, trying to keep her expression neutral. "You’re imagining things," she muttered.
Draco studied her for a moment longer, his icy blue eyes gleaming with suspicion. "Am I?" he whispered, leaning in closer. "You’ve always had a strange fascination with Potter. Almost like… you care about him a little too much."
Lily’s breath caught in her throat, and she could feel the panic rising inside her. She clenched her fists at her sides, desperately trying to keep her emotions in check. She couldn’t let Draco push her into revealing the truth—not now, not ever.
"Draco," she warned, her voice low, "don’t."
He smirked, clearly enjoying the power he had over her in that moment. "What’s the matter, Lily?" he whispered, his tone dripping with malice. "Afraid I might figure out your little secret?"
Lily’s stomach twisted with fear and guilt. She could feel the truth teetering on the edge, threatening to spill out, but she couldn’t let it happen. Not here, not like this.
Before she could say anything else, Harry stepped forward, glaring at Draco. "Leave her alone, Malfoy," he snapped, his voice tense with anger.
Draco glanced at Harry, his smirk fading slightly. He looked between Lily and Harry for a moment, the gears in his mind clearly turning. Then, with a shrug, he turned away, his cold smirk returning.
"Fine," Draco said dismissively, waving his hand. "I have better things to do than waste my time with the likes of you." He glanced over his shoulder at Lily, his eyes narrowing. "But this isn’t over, Lily."
With that, he turned on his heel and walked away, Crabbe and Goyle lumbering after him. Lily stood frozen, her heart pounding in her chest, her mind racing with everything Draco had said. She felt like she was standing on the edge of a cliff, and one wrong step could send her plummeting into the truth she had been hiding for so long.
"Lily?" Harry’s voice broke through her thoughts, pulling her back to reality.
She blinked, turning to face him. His expression was a mix of confusion and concern. "Why did you…?" he started, but he didn’t seem to know how to finish the question.
Lily forced a small smile, though it didn’t reach her eyes. "I just didn’t want to see him picking on you," she said softly.
Harry studied her for a moment, as if trying to read her thoughts. But before he could say anything else, Hermione tugged on his sleeve, urging him to let it go. With a final glance at Lily, Harry turned and followed his friends down the hall, leaving her standing there, alone.
As soon as they were out of sight, Lily let out a shaky breath, her legs feeling weak beneath her. She leaned against the cold stone wall, her mind reeling with everything that had just happened. Draco was getting too close, too close to the truth she had been hiding for years. If he kept pushing, she wasn’t sure how much longer she could keep the secret buried.
And as much as she wanted to protect Harry, she couldn’t shake the growing fear that one day, the truth would come out. And when it did, everything would change.
