Back at Old Tower 17, the Resistance was preparing for their next move. The tension in the underground bunker was thick as Maeve stood with Lily and the other leaders around the holographic map of the city. Dorian, the former soldier who had joined their cause, was pacing back and forth, his frustration evident.
“We need to hit them soon,” Dorian said, his voice a low growl. “We’re running out of time. The Council’s already tightening security around the districts. Whatever they’re planning, it’s coming fast.”
Lily crossed her arms, her sharp eyes scanning the map. “We can’t just rush in blind. We need to know what Protocol Zero is before we make a move.”
Maeve studied the map, her mind racing. She had been working on a plan to disrupt the siren network, but without knowing what Protocol Zero was, it felt like they were walking into a trap. Every piece of the system was interconnected—if they disabled the wrong relay or triggered the wrong frequency, it could set off a chain reaction that would alert the Council to their presence.
“We need more information,” Maeve said, her voice calm but firm. “There’s a database at the central siren tower. It’s heavily encrypted, but if I can access it, I might be able to find something about Protocol Zero.”
Dorian stopped pacing, his eyes narrowing. “That’s suicide. The central tower is the most secure building in the city. You’d be walking straight into their hands.”
Maeve met his gaze, her resolve hardening. “It’s a risk we have to take. If we don’t find out what Protocol Zero is, we’ll never be able to stop it. And if we wait too long, it’ll be too late.”
Lily glanced at Dorian, then back at Maeve. “She’s right. We need to know what we’re up against. But we’ll need to be careful. If they catch even a hint that we’re trying to breach the tower’s security, they’ll lock down the entire city.”
Maeve nodded, her mind already working through the details. She would need access codes, a way to bypass the tower’s surveillance, and a backup plan in case things went wrong. It was dangerous, but it was the only way.
