CHAPTER XII - STARS

I headed back to my room. I couldn't stop thinking about how awful Sophia must feel when she looked at me. Guilt weighed on me because of it...

I lay down on the unmade bed and stared at the ceiling. It was a full star map, with all the constellations outlined and all the stars. I wondered which one might be Zoe—perhaps the brightest or the closest. Memories of my grandmother's stories flooded back, the ones she used to tell me when I was little, about how those stars were the most blessed of all the souls who had passed. They were all good people who once walked on the same earth that I now walk. Those who dedicated their lives to protecting and caring for others, who fought for them, never giving up. They were the heroes of different ages who had traveled through this world.

My grandmother also used to say that the brighter the star, the more significant that person was in their time; but the closer it was, the more important that person was to us.

I'd always thought she made up those stories to comfort me, to help me believe that those who leave this world are still watching and listening from another. They are the little voice in your conscience telling you to take the other path, the one that's right.

I never really believed in those stories—I thought they were just fairy tales—but something, or someone, was telling me that this time, it was different. I wasn't chosen at random for this task. If I'm here, it's because I was meant to be. And if Zoe, who looked exactly like me, was a respected warrior, then maybe I could become one too.
