Chip had talked to Marie for a while and she had told him about the days past, when she went to church whenever God put it on her heart. "Not that I don't do that now, but now I can't tell anyone how good it was to talk to the Lord" "You can tell me", Chip suggested and gave her a smile. "Aren't you so sweet, my dear?", she said and she laughed the way all granny's laughed, warm and from the heart.
They agreed to send letters every once in a while when he'd be away from Allport again and meet when he'd return.
"God bless you, Chip", she eventually said with a smile as she stood up and he looked up from where he sat and almost hesitant replied: "God bless you, Marie"
She smiled encouragingly and waved him goodbye. "I will hear from you soon, I hope"
"Yes, you will. Goodbye", he said waving as she left. Then he turned forward, looking at the altar.
"Thank you", he said as he heard the steps leave the church, eyes on the cross as he said it again, "Thank you"
He lingered in the presence of God for a little while longer, beginning to read Matthew. It was quiet and Chip felt the rush of life slowly fading into a calming warmth.
It was unusual for him to feel safe enough to even take a breath deep enough to sigh it out, but here with God it was so easy.
After a while he realized that the sun was setting, walked up to the altar and after a moment of hesitation, in which he wasn't sure what to do, he got on his knees and prayed."Uhm... Hello God, I'm not sure how to go about this, but I feel like that's okay with you", he felt the comfort of that realization in his core as he took a shaky breath, "Thank you for showing me to your house and for giving me your word, it's really good so far, although I don't understand all of what I read yet. Hey, and if it's not to much to ask, watch over my friends when we sail off again, yeah? I really want them to be safe. I forgot what to say to end the prayer, I think Marie said it was Amen. So, Amen."
He stayed in place for a moment, before slowly getting up and walking towards the door. All when he stopped and turned to look over his shoulder. A beam of sunlight fell through the stained glass windows, casting a beautiful weave of color onto his face.
"Are you gonna come along or do I meet you here only?", he asked quietly, when a gust of wind whistled through the rows of seats and brushed past him to the door. He smiled and followed. He tugged the Bible into his bag and returned to the ship. He saw the crew loading up the ship with food and drinks, getting ready for late departure during the night after the rush of Allports evening cast offs. Jay waved at him where she was flying above the Albatross and he waved back, following Gryffon up onto the deck, getting into the quarters. He tugged his bag away under his pillow and returned onto the deck, helping to pack up.
He hummed at work and found himself thinking about the book in his bag and the truth it held. "Someone seems happy", he suddenly heard, jumping in surprise, almost dropping the crate he held.
"You almost gave me a heart attack", he said as Jay started laughing. "Sorry", she replied, landing next to him as he set down the crate.
"It's fine", he huffed and stretched.
"Why do you look so...", she tilted her head, "Less haunted?" "Had a good day", he said and smiled, "Guess that helps with hauntedness" "You're being weird" "Weird?" "I don't know how to describe it", she said and Gillion chimed in. "You're shiny" "Shiny?" "Like you're glowing, you know?" "Yeah, that's it", Jay agreed and Chip chuckled."I don't know what you're talking about"
"You're smiling so genuinely, I can't see that haunted stuff in your eyes", she said and he pulled up an eyebrow. "Isn't that good?" "It is, but it's so weird too", she said. "What happened?", Gillion asked and Chip smiled and shrugged. "I met Jesus", he said quietly and after a moment Jays eyes widened while Gillion looked confused. "Who's Jesus?" "The one who saved me", Chip said and the met Jays eyes, "What's wrong?"
She shook her head. "Four eye conversation", she replied and he shrugged, nodded. "So this Jesus, he saved you from the soldiers yesterday?", Gillion asked obliviously and Chip huffed out a chuckle. "I guess you could say that" "Seems like a great guy", he said and walked off to help Queen with a barrel, while Jay pulled Chip aside. "Christianity was banned years ago, how do you know about Jesus?" "God called me home", he said, remembering Maries words at church. "It's dangerous to be a christian", Jay said and Chip looked at her for a moment, thinking when suddenly he said: "And for Jesus it was dangerous to even set foot on earth, yet he did it and gave the sacrifice it took to save the souls of his followers. I want to live in the light he showed me."Chips eyes filled with genuine emotion as he looked at Jay, urging: "I can feel God's presence and it is so full of warmth and love. It's worth being hated for by others."
She could tell he was truthful, felt the air knocked from her lungs. "As long as you know what you're doing", she said, before sighing, "Aster and Lunadeia never had a foothold with you anyway" "Cause there's only the one true God, Jay, he's with us", Chips voice was trembling as he smiled at her, "God is with us and I know it"She pressed her lips together, almost like she was afraid to tell him that she didn't believe him, before she just nodded and patted his shoulder as she left.
