He stood in front of the door and knocked, waiting for it to swing open.
As it did Rebeccas father stood in the door and looked down on him. "Good evening, sir", Chip said and held onto the flowers he had brought a little tighter.
Before her father could reply anything he was pushed aside slowly by Rebecca. She wore a beautiful dress. Simple, with long sleeves and a boat neckline.
For the first time he saw her with her hair down, falling softly over her shoulders and it almost took his breath away. "Chip, hi", she said a little out of breath and smiled.
He looked her up and down speechlessly and smiled. "You are so perfect", he sighed and held her a hand. She softly reached for it, her palm touching his before he gently placed her hand on the flowers, "These are for you. I remembered how you said you liked carnations, I hope I remembered the right thing there" "You did", she replied a little awestruck, hugging them close to her chest as she looked down at them, "That was so long ago" "I once heard you tend to remember important things longer", he said sheepishly and she giggled, before turning to her dad. "Would you put these in a vase for me?", she asked and his gaze softened. He looked at Chip, then back at her, took the flowers and nodded. "Of course, go on", he looked back at Chip, gaze more serious once more, "No later then ten" "Ten on the dot, hold me to it", Chip replied and then held Rebecca his arm, gently touching her hand with his as she held onto him.
Rebecca said goodbye and then followed Chip to the carriage.
He helped her inside and sat down next to her, letting out a deep sigh. "Your dad is a little scary", he admitted and she smiled. "He couldn't hurt a fly", she said and with a tug the carriage began to move forward."You know, I'm really happy you agreed to going out with me. You're the first girl to ever agree to that", he confessed and she looked down with a smile. "You're the first guy to ever ask me", she looked up at him, "Probably the only guy I would've said yes to as well" "How come?" "How come I was never asked?" "That too, cause that doesn't make sense to me either, like do the guys on this island not have eyes? But I meant the only guy you would've said yes to"
She chuckled and blushed. "Well, I don't know, I just always felt like there would be someone I should wait for and then we met and ever since I just- I thought to myself- I guess it's foolish, but- but I thought the waiting had an end", she mumbled and he felt his heart skip a beat, looked up at the sky and smiled. "So I wasn't the only one who felt like that, that's good to know"She looked up and he met her eyes, both of them feeling joy in their hearts, when she gently took his hand and said: "Your eyes are different since the time of the ball, brighter. It's like there's a fire burning inside you"
Chip squeezed her hand softly and nodded.
"There is", he replied, "It has to do with the thing that has changed since we met first, but before I tell you, you have to promise me secrecy. Can I trust you?" "Completely", she whispered back and leaned a little forward."Have you ever heard of Jesus Christ?", he asked and her eyes widened. "Christ? That's illegal, Chip", she whispered and he nodded.
"Rebecca, he has changed my life", he replied and smiled so sincerely it made her heart melt, "I met him in the abandonment district in Allport, he lead me to the church, to his word, to the love my heart was deprived of for years" "Chip I don't know if I can believe you", she said and he gently tugged a strand of hair behind her ear.
"I know how unbelievable it sounds, love so great it can turn a person around like this, but it's testimony in itself. I couldn't have gotten rid of the demons and sadness inside me alone. I couldn't have put those broken pieces together alone, cause believe me I tried, but God-", he let out a light hearted laugh, "He called me to him, called me home and took all the pieces and made the most beautiful mosaic like it was nothing""That sounds beautiful", she admitted, before she sighed, "But I'm sure he wouldn't want me to come to him anyway, so maybe we should just cut this short and I should just go home. I'm not the woman suited for someone like you, not in his eyes surely" "He encouraged me to talk to you", Chip said and held her hand tightly in both of his as she stopped and looked at him, "And believe me, if God can love me like this, he can love you too. He already does. You don't have to be whole, you don't have to be perfect, you don't have to know a thing about him yet. He will make you whole, he will fix the brokenness, he will teach you all you have to know, he will heal the pain and the sadness. If you just have faith in him, you will tell a mountain move from here to there and it will happen."
"You don't understand, I sin. I'm not clean, I can't go to the holy places I would have to go to, I-", she teared up, "A God like you describe him, couldn't love a sinful soul like mine"
Chip gently pulled her into his arms and held her as he whispered: "He loved you when he made you, he loved you when he wrote your story, he loved you when he send you here. Do you really believe the God who knew all your wrong doings, all the set backs, all the sin before you were even born, wouldn't have found a way to love you through it all? He loved us all so much he gave his one and only son, that anyone who believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. And that includes you. You, who he made so remarkably, so wonderfully that everytime I look at you I see testimony of the beauty in his creation, I see testimony of his attention to detail, I see testimony of his goodness. He loves you, Rebecca. More then you could ever know. No matter your past mistakes."She sobbed and looked up at him. "Are you sure?", she asked and he nodded, tears welling up in his own eyes. "When he could love me, after all I had done and suffered through, he can love anyone."
She felt a shaky smile tugging on her lips.
"I'd like to see him try", she said with sincerity and some underlying doubt mixing in her tone. "He won't disappoint", Chip replied and smiled at her.
