When Chip went to bed that night he stared at the ceiling. He heard the bubbles of Gillion snoring in his barrel, Jays evened out breath and the water hitting against the ship gently.
He thought to himself how incredible this revelation had been, how right it felt to proclaim his faith to Jay, though she didn't seem as excited for him as he had hoped. He reached his hand under his pillow, feeling for the bag and pulling it to him. He took out the Bible and let the bag drop quietly to the ground. The dim moonlight fell in through the window behind him illuminating the verses. He read another chapter in Matthew and as he closed the book he fell into a peaceful slumber.
The next morning woke him up to the sound of his friends laughing on the top deck.
He felt for the Bible beneath his pillow and relaxed with the knowledge that all this beauty revealed to him wasn't just a dream.
Slowly he got up and walked upstairs, joining Jay and Gill in the kitchen, smiling softly at their laughter. He loved them so much.
Jay saw him and quickly poured him a cup of coffee, just the way he liked it, with frothy milk and caramel syrup. A sweet monstrosity, Jay had once called it and yet she made it again and again, every morning just like she made Gills coffee and her own.All that was left to Chip was Ollie's hot chocolate in the morning, which no one seemed to make just right other then him.
Or maybe that was just Ollie wanting to have a thing for just Chip and him.
Chip liked it either way.He took the cup and sat down with them, listening to their banter and smiled in blissful relaxation. In his mind just the simple words Thank you God as he enjoyed the peace all around him and finally also the peace in his soul. "You look so happy, that Jesus you told us about really seems like a great friend that you're still smiling here the next day", Gill said and Chip smiled, while Jay looked at him worried. "You don't even know how great Gill", Chip said and took a sip of his coffee. "Who is he anyway?", Gill then asked and picked up his cup as well.
Jay quickly intervened: "Just some guy" "Just some guy? Jay, that guy saved me", Chip said, with a certainty and conviction and deep joy as he smiled, then chuckled, "Look into my eyes and tell me there are demons staring back, cause when I look into the mirror, for the first time in a decade I see me. I don't see the haunting eyes of my past anymore, I see joy, Jay. And all that because I met Jesus and he saved me."He teared up, then looked at Gill and said: "Jesus is my Lord and Savior. He is the son of God and I am so glad I met him, for truly I have never felt this peaceful in years"
"God? What are you talking about? Aster and Lunadeia don't have sons named Jesus" "I'm not talking about them, I talk about the one true God, the creator of the heavens and the earth", Chip smiled and quickly wiped a tear off his cheek, "And he is greater then any God Mana has created for itself"Gillion looked at him for a long time, a mix of anger, then confusion and then some sort of empathy gleaming in his eyes. "I may not understand what you're talking about, but I see that this is important to you and that you cherish it very much", he took his hand and smiled, "I know how there can be comfort in something no one else understands"
Chip teared up once more, squeezed Gills hand with his and then pulled him into a hug.
"Thank you", he said and then he looked up and repeated, "Thank you""What are we saying thank you about?", Ollie asked as he walked inside the kitchen sleepily, still in his pyjamas. "We're thankful for our friends", Chip said and let go of Gill, before walking up to the stove, "You want some hot chocolate, kid?" "Yes!", Ollie said and gave him a beaming smile.
Chip helped him to get up on the counter and then began to make Ollie's hot chocolate, listening to him ramble about his dream last night. He handed Ollie over a mug and urged him to be careful. "It's really hot, so don't burn yourself" "Thank you", Ollie said and took it, kicking his feet over the edge of the counter. "You're welcome", Chip said and ruffled his hair, "Excited to go home?" "Yeah, I think it'll be cool", he said, "My mum will be so impressed with all the stories I'll tell her" "I bet", Chip said took the empty mugs from Gill and Jay, beginning to do the dishes."Are you excited?", Ollie asked and Chip nodded. "It'll be fun to go back to the place were the adventure began", he said, "And besides I'm really glad that you'll be home with your mum after all this time" "I kinda miss her, I'm starting to forget her face", Ollie said and Chip hugged him and nodded, knowing that feeling when the faces start to slip away. "We'll be there soon and you'll know exactly who to run to", he said and smiled at him encouragingly, "You're the most awesome kid I know, you're so smart you'll know it immediately"
"Yeah, I'm pretty great", Ollie said and Chip chuckled. "Absolutely"After doing the dishes and letting Ollie run off by himself Chip went below deck and searched for a quiet corner. He got on his knees and clasped his hands together as he started praying. "Dear Lord, please give Oliver the strength to hold onto the fading image. Help him remember the face of his mother and let us make haste to safely arrive at Zero. You know, that I know the pain of forgetting the face of ones mother, don't let him suffer the same way, I did. Hold him in your light, God, please", he whispered so quietly it was more like a continual string of hush breaths, "Thank you for getting us this far and please continue to bless us with safe travels. Amen."
He stood up and dusted off his pants, before walking into his quarters and grabbing the Bible from under his pillow. And there he began to read for a few more chapters, feeling the comfort of companionship, like Jesus wasn't just in the words, but right next to him.
