Jungkook lay on the bed beside you, his back turned towards you. He tried to steady his breathing, listening to the sound of your own breath, as faint as it was. He could tell you were still awake, your movements in the bed betraying your wakefulness.

He couldn't really sleep either. The mere awareness of your presence just inches away from him was enough to keep him wide awake. The silent tension in the room was almost palpable.

He shifted quietly, turning to look at you over his shoulder. The half-silhouetted shadow of your form in the dim light of the room made his chest tighten a little. The sight was almost too domestic, too intimate, for the casual friends you were supposed to be.

"Y/N," he whispered quietly, softly enough not to disturb the silence of the night. "Are you awake?"

You tensed slightly at the sound of his voice, surprised that he could tell you were still awake. You felt you throat dry you couldn't just speak.

Jungkook waited for a few seconds, his gaze fixed on your form, hoping for a response. The silence was deafening, only broken by the slow ticking of the clock on the wall. It was clear that you weren't asleep, but why weren't you saying anything?

He turned fully towards you now, lifting his head off the pillow to get a better view. Your face was partly hidden in the shadows, making it hard for him to gauge your expression.

"Y/N," he tried again, a hint of pleading in his voice. He reached out a hand, gently touching your shoulder, his fingers barely grazing the fabric of your shirt.

"I know you're awake," he said, "I can tell. Talk to me."

You froze at his touch, the unexpected contact sending a shiver down your spine. Your heart leaped into your throat as you felt his fingers gently touch your shoulder. For a moment, you wanted to feign sleep, to avoid the conversation that was clearly coming, but you couldn't bring yourself to.

You let out a soft sigh before finally speaking.

"I'm awake," you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper.

A flicker of relief passed through Jungkook's eyes. Knowing you were awake and not purposely ignoring him made his heart rate slow a bit. He withdrew his hand from your shoulder, laying back on the bed, closer now.

"Can't sleep?" he asked quietly. "Me neither."

You rolled over to face him, mirroring his position. As your eyes adjusted to the dim light, you could see his face more clearly now. The shadows cast by the moonlight made his features appear softer, yet more intense, if that was even possible.

"Yeah," you replied, sighing softly. "I guess I'm just... a little keyed up."

That was an understatement. The situation, the close proximity, the charged air... all of it was messing with your mind.

Jungkook nodded understandingly. He knew exactly what you meant, but he didn't want to outright say it. Instead, he tried to act nonchalantly. For now, at least.

"Same," he mumbled, his fingers fiddling with the hem of his shirt. "I guess it's... it's a new place, right? Plus, the flight... it was tiring."

He shifted a bit closer, his leg brushing against yours slightly under the duvet. Even that small touch made him feel strangely tingly all over.

You nodded, silently agreeing with him. It was true, after all. The flight, the change in environment, it all could contribute to making it hard to sleep.

Yet, you knew those weren't the only reasons you were awake. The closeness, his proximity, even the sound of his soft breathing were driving your senses wild. The small brush of his leg against yours sent a thrill down your back.
