Saphira's POV
The stars in the sky were beautiful to gaze at. If only the moment was more peaceful. Not only did we eat the last bit of food we took with us on our journey, but Charlie still hasn't returned from wherever he dissapeared to. My worries never seem to end. At this rate, I'd have grey hair before I even turned 12.
"I'm going to go search for Charlie." As I make this announcement, I struggle to get up on my own two feet. My legs weren't even used on our journey across the sea, but they sure act like it. "But, what if he returns when you leave?" Silver was obviously not very fond of my idea. I sigh in exasperation, "And, what if he's in danger? I can't just sit here and wait, I need to find him."
"No need, I'm back." Charlie came out from the shadows like a boogyman and gave us a fright. In Silver's fright, she tackled me to the ground. "What the hell?! Where were you?" I shouted in anger as I pointed an accusing finger at him. I was about to shout some more provanities at him, but stopped myself when I noticed his expression. "What's wrong?"
He sat down near our pathetic little fire and threw a bit more fuel to keep it alive. He kept his eyes on the small flames, "I only went out to find some more food when I stumbled upon something". 'Well, aint that a way to start a horror story'. Charlie didn't look very impressed with the face I was pulling. "I thought the Island was unhabitate, but I found a small town of sorts." He continued on to explain how the town looked.
I was impressed that Charlie and I had the same thoughts of this Island, but happy that it was inhabitate. Only my happy mood turned sour as Charlie continued talking, "The thing is, this small town doesn't look great. I checked the place out and realized it's just a broken town with it's broken people." I raised a brow at the way he explained it, "What do you mean by that?"
Charlie gave a tired sigh, "What I meant is, it's no different from the home we left. Only there isn't a virus, of course." That wasn't great news. It's like we basically went from one poverty to another. "I don't get it. Shouldn't we be happy that we found atleast something, even if it's not great?" Silver broke our depressed silence. She was right, this was a far cry better than our home we left.
Charlie gave her a small smile, "You're right. We shouldn't be glum about this. We should make the best out of it." I looked at Charlie and became a bit worried. He probably would try his best to make the situation work out. I know this, because of what he said to me while we were adrift at sea. He wanted to follow his dad's parting words and live his life. I just hope that this place won't dissapoint him too much, or worse, crush his dreams.
"We can make it work. We just need to make a plan." I try to sound entuciastic, trying to bring everyone's spirits up. Sure, poverty sucks, but it's not to say we'll always stay in that category forever. Charlie smiles in thanks that I was atleast going to give this a try. Silver just looked happy that no one was depressed anymore.
For the rest of the night, we made plans on what to do and what not to do when we leave for the town in the morning. It would have been great to be able to live on this beautiful beach, but we aren't equiped and skilled at living in the wild. Back home, before dad died, he use to teach us all kinds of things about what life was like without a roof over your head. We wouldn't have survived out here on our own.
...
The next day, we prepare to set out. We didn't have anything of value on us other than the boat. Charlie said that the town looked more like a fishing town, so we could probably sell our boat for a good price. I refused and thought that it was best that we hid it, so when shit went south, atleast we have a means of escape. Hiding the boat was the hardest part to do, it was incredibly heavy.
