ᴺᴼᵂ ᴾᴸᴬᵞᴵᴺᴳ : You can't stop the girl
"They tryna take our voices, they tryna make our choices
So we scream loud, loud, loud"
2013 — Brazil
"How was your first day of school?"
Fifteen-year-old Eilana Santos did something she ever so rarely did — glare. It wasn't a vicious glare, not really, but it was enough to make her father frown at her. Eilana placed her headphones over her ears, trying to ignore the loud noise from outside the car.
Miguel had plenty of experience being a dad to Eilana, even the slightly more emotional teenager. He never let anything go. Giving up trying to talk to her, he took to signing instead assuming she must be overstimulated.
What happened? Miguel signed.
I was alone. Eilana signed back, frustrated. I miss Charles.
Lana, I told you that you could keep going to school in Monaco if you wanted. Miguel pursed his lips. Your mother will still let you.
No. I want to stay in Brazil. Eilana paused for a moment. I'm sorry. I'm just frustrated.
She slumped down in the back of her seat, her eyes like a puppy that had been shouted at. She hadn't realised how hard it would be to move back to Brazil; she'd hoped that since everyone was knew to high school, it wouldn't be so hard.
I tried to make a friend but all he cared about was you. Eilana admitted. The girls here are scary, I have forgotten how to talk to them.
The same way you talk to everyone else. Miguel signed with a chuckle. All you have to be is kind, you know that.
I know. I just wish people were kind back.
Eilana gave her dad a small smile as he began to drive, watching out the window as the other kids watched the bright red Ferrari drive past them. Part of Eilana wanted her dad to be more discreet but part of her also knew if everyone knew who she was anyway, what's the point of hiding it?
