The next morning arrives with the soft light of dawn filtering through the hospital room windows. I wake up, feeling a bit more rested but still haunted by the events of the previous night. Adam is sitting in the chair beside me, his eyes heavy with exhaustion but filled with relief when he sees I'm awake.
"Morning, Riley," he says softly, giving me a gentle smile. "How are you feeling?"
I sit up slowly, the dizziness from yesterday mostly gone. "Better," I reply, my voice steady. "Thank you for being here."
Before long, the doctor arrives, checking my vitals and ensuring I'm well enough to be discharged. "You're doing much better, Riley," he says with a reassuring smile. "You can go home today, but make sure to take it easy and rest. You need time to recover emotionally."
Adam helps me gather my things, and Alex arrives just as we're about to leave. He looks anxious, but there's a determination in his eyes that I can't quite place.
"Ready to go?" he asks, his voice gentle.
I nod, grateful for their support. The ride home is quiet, the events of the past day still fresh in our minds. When we arrive at my house, Adam and Alex help me inside, making sure I'm comfortable.
As I settle onto the couch, I can't help but feel a mix of emotions—relief to be home, but also a lingering sense of fear and uncertainty. Adam and Alex sit beside me, their presence a comforting anchor.
"We'll be here for you, Riley," Adam says softly. "Whatever you need, just let us know."
Alex nods in agreement. "And remember, take it one step at a time. We're here to help you through this."
I give them both a small, grateful smile. "Thank you. I don't know what I would do without you guys."
As the day goes on, I try to focus on resting and taking care of myself, knowing that I have friends who care deeply about me. The road to recovery will be long, but with Adam and Alex by my side, I feel a glimmer of hope that I can get through this.
Alex's POV
I can't shake the weight of Anna's words from my mind. As the day drags on, the reality of her threat becomes more apparent. I have to face her, and I have to do it now. Leaving Riley's house, I make my way to a secluded spot in the park where Anna asked me to come.
She's already there, leaning against a tree with a smug look on her face. "I knew you'd come," she says, her voice dripping with satisfaction.
I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. "Let's get this over with, Anna. What exactly do you want?"
Her smile widens, and she steps closer, her eyes gleaming with triumph. "It's simple, really. You date me, show me off, and make me popular. In return, I keep quiet about Alan. Deal?"
My jaw clenches, anger bubbling under the surface. "And if I refuse?"
Her expression hardens, her voice turning icy. "Then I tell Riley everything. How do you think she'll react when she finds out that your brother was the one who tried to hurt her? She'll never look at you the same way again."
The thought makes my blood run cold. I can't let that happen. I can't risk Riley's safety or her trust. My fists tighten at my sides as I force the words out. "Fine. I'll do it. But know this, Anna—this isn't over. One day, you'll pay for what you're doing."
She smirks, clearly pleased with herself. "Oh, Alex, always the hero. Just remember, you agreed to this. I'll be in touch."
As she walks away, the weight of the decision settles heavily on my shoulders. I've made a deal with the devil, and now I have to live with the consequences. But for Riley's sake, it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
