The talk that night between Livia and Jonas had created a sense of calm between them, a tentative understanding that, while unspoken, eased some of the tension. Jonas hadn't stopped with his affectionate gestures, but there was a notable shift. The grandness had diminished; the small moments of closeness and thoughtful gestures continued, yet now they seemed less demanding, more restrained. Livia appreciated the space he gave her, but each act still brought a flutter of guilt within her—a gnawing reminder of her inability to reciprocate the depth of his feelings, or at least the uncertainty about her own.
Around them, life in the school moved forward as usual, yet her friends were not oblivious to the subtle shift in dynamics between Jonas and Livia. Sophie, Isabelle, and Emma had all begun to notice the frequent times Jonas would linger near Livia, the smiles exchanged, and the way he seemed to be attentive in a way that went beyond friendship. Naturally, curiosity piqued their minds.
One evening after classes, Sophie couldn't hold back anymore. During their usual hangout time at the cafeteria, she gently nudged the conversation toward Livia's growing closeness with Jonas.
"So... what's the deal with you and Jonas?" Sophie asked, a mischievous smile playing on her lips as she took a sip of her drink.
Livia shifted uncomfortably in her seat, forcing a smile, knowing this question was bound to come sooner or later. "What do you mean? We're just friends."
Isabelle raised her eyebrow, giving her a playful nudge. "Sure, just friends. Come on, Liv. You two spend so much time together, and he's always... you know, looking at you like you're the only person in the room."
Livia shrugged, playing with the edge of her napkin. "It's not like that. He's just really nice. He's like that with everyone."
Emma, sitting quietly up until now, observed her carefully. There was something about Livia's tone that felt a little off, like she was avoiding more than just the conversation. But sensing the unease in her friend, Emma decided not to push her further.
"Okay, okay, let's leave her be," Emma said, giving Sophie and Isabelle a meaningful glance. "If Livia says there's nothing to it, we should respect that. Right?"
Reluctantly, the other girls agreed, though Sophie gave a little sigh. "Fine, but if you ever want to dish, you know where to find us."
Livia smiled at their teasing but felt a pang of anxiety. She knew her friends were only looking out for her, but it wasn't something she could easily explain—not even to herself. As they left the cafeteria and went their separate ways, Livia felt the weight of her confusion heavier than ever. It felt wrong to keep this inside, but she wasn't sure how to vocalize her tangled emotions.
That evening, as Livia sat at her desk trying to focus on some homework, a gentle knock came at her door. Surprised, she got up and opened it to find Emma standing there, her face calm and reassuring.
"Hey, you busy?" Emma asked with a soft smile.
"Not really," Livia replied, stepping aside to let her in. "Come in."
Emma entered and sat on the edge of Livia's bed, glancing around the room that was as neat as always. The quiet between them was different now—comfortable, yet tinged with an unspoken invitation to open up.
"I know you didn't want to say much earlier, but I just wanted to check in on you. You know you can always talk to me, right? No pressure, though," Emma said gently.
Livia hesitated for a moment, feeling the familiar reluctance to dive into her thoughts. But something about Emma's presence felt safe, and after the past few weeks of confusion and uncertainty, she realized she needed to let some of it out.
"I don't know what's wrong with me, Emma," Livia started, her voice low and shaky. "Jonas has been so sweet—he's thoughtful, he cares... but I just... I don't know if I feel the same way. Or maybe I do? It's like I'm stuck in this place where I can't figure out my own emotions. I don't even know if what I feel is real or if it's just... guilt. Guilt that I can't give him what he seems to want."
Emma listened quietly, nodding as Livia spoke, letting her friend release everything that had been building up inside. When Livia paused, Emma reached out and placed a comforting hand on her arm.
"You're not broken for feeling unsure, Livia. It's normal to have doubts, especially when you're not certain about your own feelings. And Jonas... I'm sure he understands more than you think. It's not easy for either of you, I know. But you have to give yourself some grace. Don't force yourself into anything you're not ready for."
Livia bit her lip, feeling tears prickling at the back of her eyes. "But he's done so much for me. All his gestures, the way he looks at me... It's like he's already all in, and I feel like I'm holding him back. I don't want to hurt him."
Emma sighed softly, her expression thoughtful. "I get it. And I can see how much you care about him, even if it's not in the way he's hoping for. But maybe that's something you need to tell him, too. Being honest with yourself—and with him—might be the best way forward."
Livia nodded, a tear slipping down her cheek as she quickly wiped it away. "I don't want to lose him. Our friendship means a lot to me."
"And you won't," Emma said firmly. "If he truly cares about you, which I believe he does, he'll want to understand how you feel. And you both can figure out what comes next together, whether it's as friends or... something more. But you don't need to rush it."
They sat in silence for a few moments, Emma's words sinking in and giving Livia the comfort she needed. It was like a small weight had been lifted from her chest, though the uncertainty still lingered. At least now, Livia felt less alone in her confusion.
"I'm always here for you, Liv," Emma added softly, giving her a reassuring smile. "Whatever you decide, I'll support you."
Livia managed a small, grateful smile, her heart warming at Emma's words. "Thank you, Emma. I really needed to hear that."
As Emma left later that evening, Livia lay back on her bed, staring at the ceiling. The conversation had helped her realize that her emotions, though messy and unclear, were valid. She didn't have to have all the answers right now. For now, she just needed to be honest—with herself and with Jonas. The thought brought her a strange sense of peace, even if the path forward remained uncertain.

"Sometimes, the heart doesn't need a definite answer—it just needs space to breathe, to explore the quiet in between, and to find its own way to clarity. And in that space, love—whether it's friendship or something more—will find its place, without pressure, without force, just in its own time."
