Johanna didn't fear much.

Or so she thought.

Spiders creeped her out but they could easily be crushed under her foot with a wave of ancient magic or a well placed spell combo.

Trolls, they were big and dumb and could be easily knocked out with their own club.

Dark wizards and poachers? Easy to take when they always misjudged.

Goblins? Oh please.

Dugbogs, an easy slice and dice, and inferi went up in smoke and flames.

She often scoffed when other students screamed when a snake slithered through the grass near their feet, or their cat left a mouse in their bed.

Ridiculous really.

One night in the Highlands changed that for her.

It was dark, really dark.

It was fine when the moon was out, and she could see. It gave her a feeling of control over her situation, she knew what was coming.

But this was pitch black darkness and it was so quiet.

An eerie howl pierced the air, sending a feeling like ice cold water through her veins. Then another picked up the cry, and another.

She was surrounded by yellow eyes glowing in the darkness.

How many are there? She asked, cursing as her hand began to tremble. And then all she saw were flashing white teeth as she blindly struck out again and again, screaming "Diffindo!"

When the moon came out from behind a cloud she gasped, choking back a sob. A beautiful dog lay silvery brown in the grass...and it wasn't alone.. She sank to her knees beside it, desperately trying to brush the red from its coat.

"I'm sorry."

And in that moment she didn't know what she feared more, the dark or lack of control....of herself, her power.
