Chapter 39

[Kewei: Liu is a genius in commanding the army. In times of peace, he would be the finest general. But in war, his kindness is misplaced. In my heart, he doesn't need to do anything, just stay by my side.]

Anno walked toward the bedroom with a calm expression, while Liu Yian followed behind, his demeanor relaxed. Liu Yian casually threw an arm around Anno's shoulder, the two of them swaying slightly as they walked together.

Kewei stood by, his face wearing an unusual shade of confusion. Dressed not in his usual military uniform but in green camouflage, he looked out of place, standing stiffly like a wooden plank in front of the sofa.

Rufeite, who had been watching this unfold, stood up. He cracked a smile, lightly tapped his chin with his fist, then glanced over at Kewei. "With that outfit and that face, you look like a green eggplant," he said, humor dancing in his eyes.

Neither Anno nor Liu Yian turned back or even acknowledged the remark. They simply walked into the bedroom, closing the door with a soft click.

An eerie silence descended over the living room on the second floor. Rufeite and Kewei exchanged glances, both seemingly lost in thought. The ridiculous image of "green eggplant" hung in the air, while the sound of the door closing had a finality to it that left them both on edge.

Suddenly, through the closed door, faint moans and the rhythmic creak of a spring mattress could be heard.

Rufeite and Kewei: "..."

Without another word, both Rufeite and Kewei bolted toward the door like a gust of wind, fully prepared to force it open if necessary.

Though they both knew that Anno and Liu Yian were only pretending, the idea that the fake might somehow become real gnawed at them. No-even pretending was unacceptable!

Fortunately, the door wasn't locked. Kewei, being a military man, reached the handle first and twisted it with the precision of a soldier. As he pushed the door open, both he and Rufeite, propelled by momentum, stumbled slightly forward, their legs pressing against the doorframe as they braced themselves for what lay beyond.

Unprepared for the sudden pull from the other side, both Rufeite and Kewei lost their balance and fell to the ground simultaneously.

Anno and Liu Yian emerged from behind the door, glancing down at the two sprawled figures. With perfectly synchronized movements, they clapped their hands in mock satisfaction.

Liu Yian grinned, "I told you the design of this room would come in handy one day."

Anno smirked. "If I'd known, I would've saved those bird droppings I cleaned off the windows this morning."

Liu Yian laughed, "Exactly! From now on, we should never throw away unfinished noodles-let them ferment and mold. Perfect for moments like this!"

This house was arguably the most valuable possession Anno and Liu Yian had. Liu Yian had designed the layout, and Anno handled the construction. When they first arrived in the isolated town of Lolita, they still had some wealth, so they spent extra time setting up traps like this.

Ordinarily, this room functioned as just another part of their home, but with a few adjustments, it could become a trap that led to the ecological fish pond in the basement.

Normally, catching Rufeite and Kewei in such a trap would be near impossible, but under the right provocation, anything was possible. Living in Lolita had warped Anno and Liu Yian's sense of humor to a degree.

Liu Yian rubbed his nose, peering down at the trapdoor beneath his feet. The artificial sunlight in the ecological pond below cast a lavender glow, making the water shimmer with soft purple light. But Rufeite and Kewei were hidden somewhere in the depths below, invisible from above.
