The bell rang. Yay. Homeroom was short, and it was torture when classes were short but they felt like forever. I packed up my stuff and followed Anga out of the class.
"Did you figure out what x equals?" Anga asked me.
"Y." I replied confidently.
"You really want 100% to make up for your 9-er, your last grade in Math, right?"
"YES! More than anything. Amber was really upset with that...grade." I hissed.
Amber really cares about my grades and expects me to get 100s ALL THE TIME. If I get anything lower, even a 99, she'll kill me.
I'm a cat, like Batino. I have nine lives. Welp, I'm down to eight now. Hopefully it stays that way.
I fiddle with my golden locket. Amber gave it to me when I turned 13 two years ago. She says it holds a picture of her and Amara, but I've never opened it. Any picture of Amber, I don't wanna see.
Anga and I head into Math class, where Bunga was vigorously writing things down. Ono was cheering him on.
"What the fudge..." Anga muttered.
"Bunga! What's going on?" I asked.
"Bunga's going to get an A+!" Ono exclaimed, "If he writes down what x equals!"
I feel a bit faint. Excuse me, what? Pardon? BUNGA'S GOING TO GET AN A+ BEFORE ME? "No way that's happening!" I rush through the worksheet on my desk and finish #18. I slam down my pencil in success.
Meanwhile, Bunga was still on #18. He was convinced that x equaled w. I hand in my paper to Ms. Vuruga Vuruga and sat down beside Bunga.
"You don't need an A+ to be great at Math, you know. You really don't." I didn't want Bunga to get an A+. Not because I wanted to win, because that's not who he is. Bunga naturally gets Ds and the occasional F. That's who he is. And he's fine that way.
Bunga finally wrote a W and turned to me, "You're starting to sound weird. Are you sure you ate breakfast this morning?"
"I didnt. But, anyways, an A is good enough." I squeezed his hand, "NEVER GET AN A+." I got up.
"But you always get A pluses. You say that 99 and below is terrible." Bunga protested.
I rolled my eyes, "In my opinion, an A is great. In Amber's opinion, it's horrific."
"In my opinion, that Amber sounds horrific." Bunga grinned at me.
"She is."

I slam the door close. "Amara?" I yelled, "You home?" No answer.
Batino rushes up to me and rubs against my legs. I laugh and pick him up, "You little baby." He wasn't quite a kitten anymore, but Amara and I swore Batino would always be one. I cradled Batino in my arm as I sat down to watch television. "I guess I can watch some news..." I muttered to myself. I switched on the remote.
