Shapeshifters are a sapient species that is able to shapeshift between their humanoid form and the form of any animal species they have shifted into.

Much like the ubiquitous humans, the sapient species known commonly as shapeshifters are spread throughout the world of the human world and Mushroom Kingdom world, comprised of many different cultures and beliefs. From the isolationist tribes (clans) of the Frozen North to the individuals who have integrated fully into human society, all shapeshifters have one thing in common: the ability to shift - or transform - into another animal species. The nature of that other sapient species is believed to be genetics, passed down through the patrilineal line or the matrilineal line.

Seldom seen, the shapeshifters are an sapient species who live in the untamed corners of the human world and Mushroom Kingdom world. To many in the human world, shapeshifters are little more than legends; though they exist in reasonable numbers, shapeshifters are so careful to stay hidden and so often mistaken for nothing more than an normal, regular human that they're as much a fireside story as an accepted reality. Their wariness isn't entirely without reason. In the past, shapeshifters were aggressively hunted down by humans to the point of presumed extinction; though those days are long since past, and the lesson has stuck. The shapeshifters have never trusted another sapient species since then, and to even earn their trust on an individual level is rare.
