Genetic Compatibility
The four sapient species of the human world and Mushroom Kingdom world are believed to all have evolved from a single genetic ancestor, known to scholars as the Allkin. This theory has been strengthened over the years by the discovery of bone fragments and artefacts, and as well as a single frozen, mummified corpse referred to by researchers as 'The Mother'. Due to this shared genetic ancestor, there is a certain amount of interbreeding that is possible between the four sapient species, though some pairings are much more successful than other pairings.
Shapeshifters can produce viable offspring with humans. However, there is quite a small-sized chance of early miscarriage or congenital abnormalities, especially with a human mother and a shapeshifter father or with a human father and a shapeshifter mother. Only seventy percent of children born to a shapeshifter mother and a shapeshifter father in these relationships will inherit the ability to shift, which has led to relationships with humans being frowned upon in many shapeshifter societies, and which has led to this union becoming taboo or outright forbidden in many human cultures.
Shapeshifters and shapeshifters have the highest chance of successful interbreeding; the likelihood of early miscarriage or congenital abnormalities for this pairing are on par with those of a one-species relationship. Seventy percent of children born to a shapeshifter mother and a shapeshifter father inherit the ability to shift. In contrast, a child of a shapeshifter mother and a shapeshifter father will only has a sixty percent chance to inherit their parent's animalistic-like nature.
Shapeshifters cannot reproduce viable offspring with witches, although some have been known to enjoy mutually pleasurable sexual relationships. Witches branched away from the Allkin much earlier in the human world and Mushroom Kingdom world's timeline and as such, and their reproductive organs are generally not compatible with those of shapeshifters. Whilst some variants of witches have much more human-like genitalia than other witches, all unions between shapeshifters and witches are non-productive pairings.
