Relations between Shapeshifters and Humans

Shapeshifters and humans lives peacefully together on Asima for a long while, but the relationship soured over time, and culminated in the shapeshifters being driven from the mainland to the Shapeshifter Archipelago roughly 200 years before the story takes place.

The purge
When Elraye almost managed to get onto the throne of Asima, she had support of the shapeshifters. When she failed, the shapeshifters were blamed for her success, and a very harsh presecution began, where shapeshifters were declared fair game for any Human to kill, there were rewards for anyone who brought proof that they had killed a shifter. The shapeshifters were pushed out of the towns and villages, hunted in the wild, and eventually most of who was left decided to leave Asima.

The Archipelago
The archipelago was not the first choice for the shifters to stay. They had no knowledge of an outside world, but they decided that they would rather find the end of the world than stay on Asima. However, they were unable to leave the waters around Asima, because of storms and other things keeping them out. Understanding that the gods were somehow keeping them trapped, they instead settled on the archipelago.

Shapeshifters on the mainland
Some shapeshifters stayed on mainland Asima when the rest left. They were those that were scared to leave, unable to do so, and so on. The descendants of these shifters still live on the mainland, hidden away. Some hide in plain sight in towns like Elessey or Norport, but most live on the countryside.
