You woke up in bed alone near eleven o'clock in the morning, sun streaming in through the blinds. Gally wasn't next to you, and you couldn't hear a single sound coming from downstairs. Sitting up a bit more, you saw the note he left on your side table.Y/N- Don't worry about where I went, I just had something to take care of today. I'll be home around five, but be ready to go out to eat. I'm taking you to that cafe down by the river you like. I love you so so much and I'll see you tonight
xoxxx -Gally
Usually Gally let you know where he was going at all times in case you needed something in an emergency, so this note was both unusual and unexpected. However, since you didn't have the slightest clue where he would be, you left it up to him.
You spent the day cleaning the house and dancing to your favorite playlist on Spotify. At 3:45 you went upstairs and got ready for dinner, slipping on the sundress that Gally loved on you. At five o'clock exactly he rang the doorbell and gave you a single rose. On the way to the cafe, he played a CD of Y/F/S. The restaurant sat you down immediately at a table on the patio that sat on columns above the river. The lights of the city were going on and you were so distracted that you heard Gally say your name only the third time.
"Sorry darling, what were you saying?" you asked.
"Well, I just, I wanted to tell you something I haven't really told anyone before. You are the most important person in my life, and it's not fair to keep this from you when it means so much to me," Gally said. His adam's apple bobbed up and down nervously, and some of the anxiety creeped across the table and seeped into you.
"What is it Gally? You don't have to tell me where you went today, I trust you and you have the right to keep some things private."
"Damn, Y/N, you're making this hard. You really trust me that much? You weren't worried about where I was? You didn't even text me once," he admitted, slightly hurt with the thought that you didn't care where he went.
"Of course I was worried about where you went, but I know you can take care of yourself, and of course I trust you. I worried, but I knew that there was no reason to." Gally looked at you with love and surprise.
"Y/N, I love you so much. No one has ever said anything like that to me, it's hard to believe but I do believe you. However, I still feel like I have to tell you this. Today is my sister's birthday, and every year on her birthday I go to visit her."
You furrowed your brow and stared at him. "Gally, your sister's birthday is on January 11th. Evelyn's birthday isn't for months, and we see her all the time. Who are you talking about?"
"I'm not talking about Evelyn, Y/N. I'm talking about Sophia. My other sister. She was born on August 28th, the year I turned fifteen," Gally began. "She- she was a stillborn. We buried her a week later and she has a little gravestone with an angel on it. I visit her every year on her birthday and I have ever since she was born. I would ride my bike to the cemetery at first so I didn't have to ask my parents. My mom was still hurt, and I didn't want to upset her more. That's where I was today." He finished his story and sat back in his chair, messing with one of the buttons on his jacket.
"Gally, that is so sweet. I'm sorry about Sophia. I know she would have grown up with an amazing older brother. You would have been really overprotective of her and you wouldn't have let her go on any dates without giving the guy a really hard time. And you would have taught her so many things, and I know she loves you just as much as I do. She must be really proud of you," you professed.
"Y/N, she wouldn't be proud of me. You shouldn't be either. I didn't protect her! I let her die! I had one job, to keep her safe, and I couldn't even do that, and now I can't even bring myself to visit her more than once a year. I failed," he confessed. Then, something happened that you had never seen before. Gally blinked and a tear trickled down his face, perched on his chin and ready to fall. More followed, until his face was full of silent emotion and the front of his shirt was soaked with salty tears.
You reached across the table and grabbed his hand, squeezing it tightly to remind him that you were there to support him, and to love him. "Gally, none of this is your fault. I promise, none of it is your fault. Sophia was needed to be an angel in heaven, and there's nothing you could've done to stop that. Would you have wanted to? She got her angel wings without having to suffer in this world, don't you think that's what she deserved? To skip out on all the awful and bad on earth, and go straight to being the angel she is now?" Gally looked up at you with a grateful look on his face.
"I know you love her more than anything, and she knows that too. You have nothing to worry about," you continued. "Do you think.... do you think I could meet her sometime?" you asked. Gally's eyes lit up and he smiled wide.
"I could take you there now, if you'd like," he suggested. "We could just get takeout on the way home. This cafe isn't going to be disappearing any time soon, we can always come back."
You nodded and took Gally's hand as he stood up. Once you got to the cemetery, he walked slowly down the aisles and knew exactly where he was going. You got to a small rectangular stone laid flat on the ground, carved from pink stone. There was a small angel statue at the top, and Sophia's name and date carved below it. You let go of Gally's hand which was clenched tightly around yours, and sat down cross-legged in front of the stone.
"Sophia- I'm sure you know all of this," you began, "but let me tell you a couple of things about your brother. He is an absolute dork, to start out. When he asked me out for the first time, he thought it would be a good idea to take me..." You talked to the gravestone for just under an hour, and Gally watched you in admiration and awe. He knew he was damn lucky to have gotten you, and while you sat there talking to his sister, it had never seemed clearer just how much he loved you, just how much he wanted to marry you, and just how much he wanted to spend the rest of his life with no one but you.
