And if you had told me it would be this hard,
I would've never let my mother put me down.

The next few weeks leading up to school went by in a blur.

Though they often failed, Sirius and Remus tried their best to separate Lyra and Harry at night. Sirius even attempted to educate her about the birds and the bees. "I'm just saying you should know what you're getting yourself into!" He shouted after her as she fled the most awkward conversation of her life.

"Shut up shut up SHUT UP!"

To be fair, they weren't doing anything too inappropriate. Certainly, nothing that could result in the catastrophic situation that Sirius was implying.

Lyra, Harry, and Draco spent a lot of time together. Playing chess, reading, and most of all, hanging out with the Weasleys. Hermione had joined them a week after Harry had, and the end of their summer was spent relaxing in the sun, playing quidditch, and swimming in the lake. It was the perfect distraction for Lyra. Spending her days with her favorite people was enough to keep the dark clouds of fear and grief at bay. For the most part.

Lyra was filled with a seemingly bottomless pit of rage. It swirled inside her and bit at her at every minor inconvenience. She tried her hardest to refrain from lashing out at her friends, who she knew only wanted to help, but the anger ran deep. Every night as she drifted off to sleep she thought of how wonderful it would be to destroy Lord Voldemort. How lovely it would feel to crush Bellatrix Lestrange like a bug. She dreamt about how she had used the cruciatus curse on her. The rush of power she had felt as she watched her evil cousin writhe on the polished marble floors of the ministry.

Sometimes she scared herself. But she knew that the only way she would survive this war would be if she became someone else. Someone tougher, someone who not only used magic to create, but to destroy. So Lyra started reading. During the night shed slip into Remus's study and flip through the pages of all the books he owned concerning dark and dangerous forms of magic. With every death announcement in the daily prophet, Lyra's thirst for blood grew stronger.

Three days before they were set to board the Hogwarts express, Lyra and Harry were rudely awoken by banging on the door.

"WAKE UP!" Ron's voice called before he shoved the door open. "Bloody hell warn me next time!" Lyra threw off the covers, sat up, and glared at her oldest friend.

"Warn you about what Ronald?"

"That you're like-" He made a weird gesture to the bed, where Harry was still shaking himself awake.

"Oh, grow up." Lyra groaned, swinging her feet onto the ground and walking over to her closet.

"Mum and Sirius say we're leaving in 20 minutes, book lists and OWL results have just arrived. Hermione and I are waiting for you to open them.
