Ellie's POV
"Well, well... If it isn't my sister and my favorite student."
Lena appeared from behind Chloe, with what seemed like ten books that she was barely holding by her thin arms.
"And you must be?" She questions, looking at Jack sitting next to me.
"Hi, I'm Jack." He says politely.
As she struggles a bit with her books, Jack gets up to help her with them, but she coldly tells him that she's got it. He eyes me chuckling before going back to sit next to Chloe, this time.
"And Jack, you are..?" Lena inquires further, settling her books on the table next to us.
"He's Ellie's best friend." Chloe speaks before Jack and I could.
"Oh, right... Chloe told me you'd be in town." Lena adds before settling on the table next to us. "Well, it's nice to meet you." She adds on.
She sits there in silence for what felt like an eternity. We were all expecting her to just sit with us but I guess she wasn't in the mood of making conversation. She just sat there going through the books she had bought.
Chloe went back to the conversation that was taking place. Or rather she went back to the monologue she was giving before getting interrupted. She was talking about how all of her hamsters that she had as a kid have passed away in the weirdest possible way.
"One of them wouldn't get out of its wheel for days!" She almost screams. "He wouldn't even get out when we would give him food! Can you imagine that?"
And no, we couldn't imagine how horrible it must've been for the poor pet.
As her stories went told, I could see, from the corner of my eyes, Lena slightly smiling at some of the things her sister said. Jack's attention, however, was directed at my professor. I think he was expecting her to be nice and all sweet to him. I kind of expected that too.
Alex came over a few minutes afterwards with a cup of coffee for Lena but she never said anything to her.Instead Alex sat down on the chair between Chloe and I and joined the conversation naturally.
Lena just put some sugar in her coffee and kept going through one of the books. "In the Dream House" it was called. I recognize that book. I've read it a few times last year.
"Aren't you going to grace us with your presence at our table?" Chloe inquires a bit saddened.
"Yeah, Lena are you going to sit down there by yourself when there's a very comfortable spot for you in the booth here?" Alex teased.
"I have to get back to reading." Lena answered. Not a look in our direction. "I don't have the time for it anymore."
"So, you'd rather sit by yourself?" Alex frowned.
"It's what I had in mind, yes." Lena plainly said.
To which Alex rolled her eyes and leaned closer to Chloe to whisper something perfectly inaudible and by the look of it, perfectly kinky.
I must say I was a bit disappointed too that she wouldn't sit with us. It felt like high school when you think you made friends with a cool person and then you find out they'd rather be by themselves than sit with you and your friends.
After a while, as Chloe and Alex engaged in some inaudible exchange that didn't need our attention. Jack got up from his seat and mentioned to the books on the shelves as he wanted to see if he was interested enough in one of them. Alex and Chloe followed him but took a swerve to the employees only room. And I was left alone sipping on my black coffee as it turned a bit stale.
