The calm before the storm

Oh god.

What did I just say?

My face burns with heat, the chilly air only highlighting my blush. I awkwardly shift my eyes from Alex, suddenly fascinated by my feet. Alex cups my face with his warm hands, dragging my back face upward, not a word leaving his mouth.

Our lips connect once more in a tender kiss, and I can feel him grinning against my mouth. His lips are soft and warm, sending a shiver down my spine. As the kiss deepens, the world around us fades, and I lose myself in the sweetness of the moment.

"Falling huh?" He says cheekily, pulling away from the kiss. My eyes meet his. "Just don't blame me when you hit the ground," he teases and his smile stretches wide across his face, showing off his pearly-white straight teeth.

"God that was so cheesy," I poke fun at him, and awkwardly chuckle. It feels like a literal fire is burning on my face from embarrassment.

"Maybe—" his hands hug at my sides, pulling me close to him again, "but in all honestly, I've been feeling the same way, I'm glad to hear you say it."

"You—have?" I reply, unable to help the smile creeping across my own lips.

Alex stifles a small laugh. "Yes, I was just hoping you felt the same." His eyes lock onto mine with a burning intensity, stirring emotions I never thought I'd experience. My stomach flips, feeling as if it could leap right out of my mouth. I squirm in my spot, almost unable to remain still under his gaze.

"I didn't think it was possible somebody like you to feel the same about me." I whisper, and Alex's expression softens.

"Jasper, I don't care about what makes us different, I just know I want to be with you." My heart melts listening to his voice flow from those enticing lips. My ears almost don't want to believe what they're hearing.

I lean in, letting my lips brush against his as they softly touch. Part of me wishes I could freeze this moment in time and hold onto it forever.

Our kiss deepens as Alex's hand slides to the small of my back, pulling me firmly against him. My arms snake around his neck, holding him close. His tongue grazes my lower lip, and I part them just enough to let him in, feeling the warmth of his breath.

Alex pulls back, and the breeze touches my damped lips—cool against my skin.

"Can I take you to dinner?" He asks, and I smile sheepishly at him.

"I could eat," I say, biting my lip, already missing the feel of his mouth on mine. Alex steps back, and we head toward his car. When we reach it, he moves ahead, opening the door for me. As I lean down to slide in, he leans close and plants a quick kiss on my cheek. I can't help but smile up at him before settling into the seat, and he gently closes the door behind me.

My phone chimes in my pocket, and I have half the mind to just ignore it. For some reason unknown to myself, I pull it out anyway, and my heart stops in its track.

Unknown number: That was a nice sunset. Your had the perfect view from where you were standing.

The butterflies in my stomach wither away, twisting into anxious knots as I stare at the glowing screen.

My expression has to be a dead give away to the dread I feel inside. Alex plucks the phone from my hands, reading the same message, his brows scrunching together.

"Who is this?"

"I don't know," I breathe shakily, facing toward him.

"What the fuck," he mutters under his breath, sliding my phone into his pocket. He slams the car angrily into gear, ripping away from the dirt lot, a cloud of dust in our wake.
