I startle awake at the loud crash in the kitchen. I looked around the room, and a bed sheet and a pillow lay on the floor. I rubbed my eyes and recollected my thoughts. “Looks like your mama is awake.” My head snapped to the doorway to find a freshly showered man in a robe with a purring, sleeping cat in his hand.
“Sasha. You slept here.”
“On the floor, and now my back hurts.”
“Served you right. I didn’t welcome you into my house.”
“I remember you begged me to stay the night, afraid I’d crash on my motorcycle.”
“In your dreams,” I say, but I’m trying to recall everything after the long ride around the city. I came up empty. “You crashing on the motorcycle would only get you out of my life.”
“I’d only haunt you down, Victoria. I don’t think you get it.”
“Why me?” I threw my hands in the air and threw myself on the pillows. “Did you know Harold saw us? He is plotting something.”
“I’ll just kill him, right, Luna?” The little shit meows in her sleep as he scratches her ear. “See. She agrees.” He leaned against the doorframe, and I swallowed when I saw the dent in his robe. He was naked beneath the thick robe, and I hated my body’s reaction to this man. I remembered the way he nipped and sucked— Mierda, Vicki. Jump the man already.
I swallowed. “Well, I disagree. You can’t kill anyone because you want to.”
“Oh, I will.” He smirked, and I rolled my eyes. “Anyone who serves as a threat to the people I love will die.” My brows hike up to my hairline.
“Love? Do not speak love to me because we don’t know what it is. A man is a liar; every man is a liar, cheat, and you’re a murderer.”
“I’m no cheat, but the blood of others wash my hands, which leads to your third point. I lie to protect those I love.”
“Those you love?”
“I have a sister, two years your senior. I love her dearly, although she hates me.”
“You have a sister?” He chuckles at my sudden reaction. That bastard had a family? Knowing he won’t repeat himself, I continued. “Why are you here if you have people to “protect”.”
“Because my sister is safe where she is, and I have unfinished business in Cuba.”
“No. You don’t.” I warned with an accusing finger pointed at him. He arches a bushy brow. “Do you care what happens to you? You will leave Cuba if you want to protect Destina.”
“There she is.” He snarls. “Anything else you want to indulge me in?” He placed the cat down. Joder! Stupid, stupid girl. “Anything happens to her in your name, Victoria Castillo, and you’re a dead girl.”
