“Papa,” Julia voiced, standing abruptly.

“You.” I stand up from my seat. “Papa?” My throat clogged. I risk a glance at my sister. She didn’t look me in the eye. “What do you mean, Papa? Is that—”

“Antonio Rossi. I’m your father.” He stepped forward.

“No.” The word was like a whip in the air. The man halted, and shock painted his expression. I didn’t care for any of it. “You have been following me around, haven’t you?!” He looked guilty, lowering his eyes to the ground.

“Papa?” Julia asks, wanting to know if it was a lie. She looks at her husband and asks, “Did you know he followed us?”

“No, Malyshka.” Julia sighed, sitting by the island. Adrik watches me with a scowl. I figured I owed the man an apology.

“I apologise for slipping between your fingers. I had important business in Colombia.”

“And you didn’t think to ask for help?”

“Help?” I incredulously asked. “I’m a cop—”

“On suspension,” He finishes.

“My love,” Julia intervenes.

I hold my palm up to stop her. “It’s alright. Adrik is right. My job must be hanging by a thin thread because of this business. Either way, I’m sorry for wasting your time.” He slides my hands inside his pockets and nods. I turn to Antonio Rossi, “Now, you.”

“Please go easy on him, Flamingo.”

“Your father stalked me and followed me to Colombia. It was you on that bus, no?” He nodded. “You’d be dead if it was anyone else.”

“Enough with the death, please. He is your father, too.” Julia pleaded.

“My father is dead, shot in the head and chest.” Antonio looked up at me with red eyes. “The Italian family in Naples. You’re telling me that Alessandro Rossi is my brother?” I looked at Julia. “Is that who your cousin married?”

“Yes,”

“And the notorious Don never looked for his daughters over years of suffering?”

“Your mother never called me. She ran away from me when she carried you in her belly. I wanted to raise my daughters.”

“Not when you have a wife and son!” Everyone fell quiet. “I had to watch my mother suffer for years because her daughter was missing. I don’t blame her for running. Julia may have taken the news lightly, but I had a father, and it’s too late to make bonds.” He nodded, and I instantly regretted my words.

Antonio started for the nook, “Papa, please, stay for lunch.”

“I’ll eat lunch in my hotel room. I don’t want to disrupt anyone.”
