Abandoned Hotel Room
Sonomi awoke to a low humming in the room. She's used to being here. This was the place where she was last left here. Before she made her decision.
The girl lay in her bed and looked around. The mint green walls looked so dull. They needed a fresh coat of paint. The room itself was a mess. It looked like there had been a party her last night. Empty cans and bottles littered the carpet. Crumbs made the dull grey look worse than it was. There might be some broken glass hidden in the fibers.
Aside from the mess, there was nothing in her. Sonomi never had any luggage when she came to this room. She never had anything to her name to begin with. The girl never stayed in one place for long anyway.
Speaking of which, it would be time to go again.
Sonomi sat up in bed. The girl rubbed her forehand. Where was she supposed to go again? She couldn't remember where her destination was supposed to be. This mission had been going on for so long, but she never had the right place she needed to be.
Where was that place?
She winced as she tried to think. Lately, there's something wrong with her body. It's taking longer for her to heal. Sonomi needed days to rest to make another jump. She didn't know what was happening to her. They told her they needed to stop.
"I can't."
She had to try and make things right. But lately, he told her to stop. Sonomi looked so confused.
"I don't understand," she said. He put his hands on her shoulders. He said something to her. She couldn't remember exactly what he said. Or rather she did and chose to tune it out.
The girl looked down at her body. The last traces of her wounds were just now starting to heal. It would take her a little bit longer. And time became the enemy. Sonomi shut her eyes. She didn't want to have to think about that.
Suddenly, the girl froze.
Was that... Was that the phone ringing? Sonomi trained her ears for a closer listen. Yep. That was a phone ringing. Sonomi made a face in her mind. That couldn't be right. This hotel had been abandoned for decades. Something told her not to look. The ringing grew louder.
She finally opened her eyes.
Everything went still around her again. Sonomi saw the phone on the nightstand. Despite it not making a sound, she reached over and picked it up.
"Hello?" she asked. A faint sea of static buzzed in her ear.
"Hello?" the girl asked again. The static grew louder for a short second before it abruptly stopped. Sonomi looked confused. She was about to hang up when she heard someone whispering.
"What did you say?" she asked. It was just three words. They came in so low that the girl almost couldn't hear them. When the words sank into her brain, the receiver fell out of her hand. Sonomi's eyes became empty. She stood up from the bed and walked into the center of the room. It was like she was not in control of her body. Was Sonomi screaming at herself to stop in her head? It was hard to say in that moment. She didn't even get a chance to think.
The girl was standing in the room one minute and then she was gone the next. Who took her? What purpose did they have to take her? What were they going to do with her now?
No matter what the answers were, the hotel was once again abandoned and silent.
