Chapter 25
The silence hung heavily in the air as we stood before the massive rocks, shaped like ancient tombs, framed by tall trees and the eerie glow of the golden gate behind us. Curiosity tinged with apprehension filled each of us as we exchanged glances, wondering what lay beyond. The rocks, with their intricate carvings, felt like they held secrets waiting to be uncovered.
I reached out, hesitantly touching the door embedded in one of the rocks. The others looked on with tense anticipation. Surprisingly, the door opened without resistance, almost as if it had been waiting for us. The air from within was cold and carried a strange, musty scent that made my skin crawl. An unsettling feeling washed over me as I stared into the darkness within.
Taking a step back, I felt an overwhelming urge to retreat. My instincts screamed that something was wrong. My friends noticed my hesitation.
"Are you okay?" Holland asked, concern etched across his face.
I shook my head slowly. "I... I have a bad feeling about this," I whispered, my voice barely audible. There was something deeply ominous about the place. I couldn't quite place it, but it felt as if we were about to wake something that should remain asleep.
As if on cue, a deep, rumbling roar emanated from within the tomb, reverberating through the air and making the ground beneath us tremble. The wind picked up suddenly, swirling and growing in intensity. Leaves and dust whipped around us as we shielded our faces from the fierce gusts.
The wind grew stronger and stronger, almost as if it had a life of its own, buffeting us backward and making it nearly impossible to stand our ground. And then, just as suddenly as it had started, the wind ceased. The stillness that followed was absolute, as if the very air itself had been sucked out of the clearing. Every nerve in my body was on edge; I could feel my heart pounding, each beat echoing in the eerie silence.
We all stood frozen, eyes darting around as we waited for whatever was to come next. The silence stretched, thick and oppressive, as if daring us to make the first move. But then, a low, menacing growl echoed from within the tomb, the sound so deep and foreboding it sent chills down my spine.
And then, from the depths of the darkness, it emerged.
A massive dragon, its scales the color of smoldering embers, stepped out from the tomb, each of its movements slow and deliberate, like a predator sizing up its prey. Its eyes gleamed with an unnatural intelligence, burning with an intensity that seemed to pierce through each of us. The dragon's nostrils flared, emitting thin wisps of smoke, and its mouth opened slightly, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth glistening in the dim light.
We all stared, transfixed and horrified, at the creature before us. It was unlike anything I'd ever seen. The sheer size of it was overwhelming, its body stretching several meters tall, wings tucked in tight against its sides, as if it were readying itself for the inevitable attack.
Berryl took a step forward, her hand reaching instinctively for her weapon, her eyes fixed on the dragon. "This... this can't be happening," she muttered, almost as if trying to convince herself.
Holland's voice shook slightly as he spoke, "It looks like it's been guarding something here for ages..."
The dragon tilted its head, studying us with what seemed like mild curiosity, as though we were nothing more than a nuisance, tiny insects interrupting its slumber. It took a slow, lumbering step forward, and I could feel the ground tremble with its weight. My friends and I instinctively stepped back, our movements mirroring one another as we attempted to maintain some distance.
