Epilogue
I took a deep breath as we arrived at the door, a towering, radiant entrance that stood in stark contrast to the dark, twisted trees of the forest surrounding us. It was glowing with an ethereal light, almost as if it were calling out to us. Its surface was smooth and polished, reflecting a golden hue that seemed to pulse with a life of its own. Each pulse felt like a heartbeat, a silent promise of something profound and mysterious beyond.
My heart raced, a mixture of excitement and trepidation swirling inside me. I glanced at my friends, who were standing just behind me, their expressions filled with encouragement but also a hint of concern. This was the door that would lead to Oliver. After everything we had been through, this door represented the culmination of our struggles, the point where our journey had been leading us all along. I turned to them, a nervous smile on my face. "What are we waiting for? Let's enter now!"
But as I stepped closer to the door and reached for the ornate handle, a strange sensation stopped me. I turned to look back at my friends, expecting them to join me, but they were all standing back, watching me intently. They made no move to follow, each of them rooted to the spot.
"What's wrong?" I asked, frowning in confusion. "Aren't we all going in together?"
Berryl was the first to respond, shaking her head slowly. "Constance," she said gently, her voice filled with both understanding and a sadness that I didn't quite comprehend. "This... this is your mission. You're the only one meant to open this door. Only you."
The words hit me hard, and I felt a sudden pang of loneliness. After everything we had endured together, I couldn't imagine facing whatever lay beyond this door without them. "But... we've done everything together so far," I protested, glancing from face to face, searching for any sign that they might change their minds. "Why can't we do this part together too?"
Wallace stepped forward, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "We would, Constance. We've stood by your side through every trial, every danger. But this..." He hesitated, as if searching for the right words. "This part of the journey is something only you can face. We can't follow you in there."
I felt my heart sink. They all looked so certain, so resolute. Part of me wanted to argue, to insist that we go in together, but a deeper part of me understood what they meant. This journey had been about more than just finding Oliver—it had been about discovering something within myself as well. And now, standing before this shining door, I realized that maybe this moment had been meant for me alone from the very beginning.
Kaleb offered me an encouraging smile, his usual carefree expression replaced with a quiet strength. "We'll be right here, Constance. Waiting for you. No matter what happens beyond that door, you're not alone."
Tears pricked at my eyes as I looked at each of them, my heart swelling with gratitude and affection. They had been my strength, my family, through every trial, every heartache. Without them, I wouldn't have made it this far. "Thank you," I whispered, my voice choked with emotion. "For everything. I... I don't know what I'd do without you."
They nodded, each of them offering words of encouragement and support. Wallace squeezed my hand, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "You'll be fine, Constance. Just remember everything we've been through, everything you've learned. We believe in you."
With one final, shaky breath, I turned back to the door. My heart was pounding in my chest, each beat a reminder of what was at stake. I raised my hand, my fingers hovering over the cool, shining handle. The glow of the door intensified as if sensing my presence, welcoming me, beckoning me forward. For a brief moment, I hesitated, fear gripping me. But I reminded myself of the journey, of the battles fought, the pain endured, and the strength I had found within.
