Chapter 29

[Part 02]

The battle continued to rage on in front of me, the water churning and frothing with each powerful movement of the serpent's massive body. My friends fought with everything they had, moving in tandem to counter its attacks and keep it distracted. The serpent was relentless, each lash of its tail sending towering waves crashing against the shore, while each swipe of its claws left deep gouges in the earth. Water sprayed everywhere, the ripples of their fight stretching out across the lake, disturbing the once calm surface.

Despite the chaos, my friends held their ground. Berryl, with her fearless spirit, leapt forward time and time again, drawing the serpent's attention and dodging its snapping jaws. Holland, still recovering from the serpent's earlier attack, rejoined the fray with renewed determination, his movements steadier now as he avoided the creature's strikes. Kaleb and Wallace used their combined magic, conjuring bursts of flame and shields of light to fend off the serpent's relentless attacks. They were bruised, exhausted, but none of them wavered, each one determined to keep fighting.

I watched from the shore, my heart pounding as I took in the scene. Every instinct in me wanted to help, to run forward and join them. But I felt small and helpless, still reeling from the recent encounter and unsure of how I could possibly aid them in this fight.

Then, something caught my eye. A faint glimmer from the water's depths on the far side of the lake. It was barely visible, a soft, almost ethereal glow that pulsed with a quiet intensity. My eyes narrowed as I tried to focus on it, realizing that it wasn't just a trick of the light. No, this was something real, something significant. My heartbeat quickened. Could it be... the key?

Without hesitation, I took a deep breath and waded into the lake. The water was cold and dark, the ripples from the ongoing battle still disturbing the surface. As I moved further in, the shimmering light beneath the water grew brighter, and I could see now that it lay at the very bottom of the lake. The realization struck me—it must be the key we had been searching for.

I took a steadying breath, gathering my courage, and plunged beneath the surface.

The water was colder than I expected, and it enveloped me in an icy embrace as I swam downward, my eyes locked on the glowing object far below. It was difficult to see, the murky depths clouding my vision, but I pushed forward, ignoring the way my lungs already ached from the cold. I kicked harder, each stroke bringing me closer to the lakebed.

As I descended, I became acutely aware of the muffled sounds above—the thundering clash of my friends fighting the serpent, the rush of water as the creature's body thrashed against the surface. But all of that felt distant now, as if I were in a world of my own, drawn down by the light in the depths.

At last, my fingers brushed against the lakebed, and I reached out, grabbing hold of the glowing object nestled in the sand. My heart leapt as I recognized its shape. It was the key, lying there as if waiting for me, radiating a warm, almost comforting light even in the cold darkness of the lake.

But my relief was short-lived. The moment I wrapped my fingers around the key, a strange energy pulsed through it, and I felt an overwhelming pressure building in the water around me. It was as if the lake itself had sensed my presence, and now, the water began to churn with an unseen force, dragging me deeper. Panic surged through me as I fought to swim back up, but the water seemed to resist, pushing against me as I struggled to reach the surface.

With a burst of determination, I tightened my grip on the key and kicked as hard as I could, fighting against the invisible force that seemed intent on keeping me submerged. My lungs burned, and my vision began to blur as I clawed my way upward, desperately reaching for the light above.
